The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners tonight approved the Interlocal Agreement between Escambia County, Florida, and the Northwest Florida Water Management District regarding Otto Hill Recreation Area. The property is located at 2401 Jacks Branch Road in Cantonment, which is a recreation area providing visitors camping opportunities and river access.
In order to provide efficient response to emergency or search and rescue situations on the Perdido River, Escambia County desires to make minor improvements to the Otto Hill area. Through this Interlocal Agreement, the county will design and construct a 10-foot wide boat launch and gate across the launch at Otto Hill for access to the Perdido River.
The District will allow county staff and contractors unlimited site access to construct the launch. Upon completion, the District will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the launch, gate and any other improvements. The cost is expected to be less than $5,000 for in-house construction.
"In addition to providing first responders access to the Perdido River, this primitive 10-foot boat launch provides another recreational access point for residents to launch small watercraft," said Natural Resources Director and Deputy County Administrator Chips Kirschenfeld. "The gate will be added as a safety feature to alert vehicles that there is a primitive launch point in that location. We hope residents enjoy this added recreational feature.”
In addition to a campsite, Otto Hill features a pavilion and a portable toilet. Visitors to Otto Hill can enjoy several short hiking trails – one of which leads to a picturesque sand bar approximately 100 yards from the main camp site. A short swim or paddle across the river leads visitors to another sand bar to enjoy. Read more about the Otto Hill Recreation Area.
