April Events at West Florida Public Libraries

Beanstack: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Monday, Feb 1 - Continuous - Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There's more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books, come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

Mystery Book Bundles are available for preschool, middle grade, and young adult readers. Preschool bags contain three new picture books. Middle grade and young adult bags contain two themed chapter books. All books can be checked out for three weeks. Be surprised by a new read today! Mystery Book Bundles are not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Mystery Book Bundles at Southwest Branch Library

Mystery Book Bundles are for children, teens and adults to check out at the Southwest Library. Your mystery bag will have three or four books that have something in common, indicated by the label on the bag. The bag is yours to keep for your next trip to the library (we’ll keep the label to re-use it), but no peeking inside the bag until you’re ready to read! Mystery Book Bundles are not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Mindful Journal

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life. Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Creative Writing Journal

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with monthly themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem. Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Take-away Soap Sack Loom kit

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Want to keep a bar of soap longer and cleaner in between uses? Soap sacks are small bags, made out of 100 percent cotton fibers that allow you to pop a bar of soap in for your personal hygiene routine. The loop on top allows you to hang the soap to dry. The fabric of the bag itself acts both as a washcloth and a means to keep the bar clean. Try out a miniature loom knitting kit. Take-away loom knitting kits are available at the circulation desk every day in April until they’re gone! Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Poetry Month Activity Kits

April is National Poetry Month and Century Branch Library will be celebrating the works of Shel Silverstein! Come by the library and pick up a take-home craft and activities kit. Shel’s amazingly witty and funny poetry books will also be available for check out. Try your hand at writing a poem in the same style as Shel and we will hang it in the library! Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

STEAM Activity Kits: DIY Cardboard Projector

Did you know you can make a projector at home? This fun and engaging project celebrates Earth day by using household materials giving hours of recycled fun! All materials for the project are provided in the kit. Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

STEAM Activity Kits: Let’s Go Fly a Kite!

Century Library is celebrating National Kite Month in April! Kits to build your own kite will be available throughout the month of April on a first come first serve basis. All materials are provided. Earth Day Activity Kits all April Long!

In addition to our regular assortment of Take-Home Craft Kits, April’s kits will focus on Earth Day all month long! Stop by Pensacola Library throughout the month of April to collect a marigold DIY seed kit, a “pet rock” cactus, or another fun kit. West Florida Public Libraries presents Family Movie Night. Come in and check out one of our Family Movie Night Bundles. Bundles include a family friendly movie, a bag of microwave popcorn and a family friendly activity. Movies can be checked out for seven days and the rest is yours to keep! Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

Bad Poetry Contest for Tweens and Teens!

Ever thought you would win a prize for being BAD at something? Do you like to write? Are you in Middle or High school? Then, participate in the West Florida Public Libraries’ BAD POETRY CONTEST from April 1 to April 30 in honor of National Poetry Month.

Here’s what to do:

1. Write the worst poem you can! It must be original to you to be the "worst," so don't copy anyone else.

2. Submit your poem in-person at one of our seven library branches or online using this form between April 1 and April 30. If you submit at a library, be sure to include your name, your grade, and a usable phone number on your submission.

3. Only one submission per person, please.

4. One middle school winner and one high school winner will be selected. An honorable mention for both categories will also be selected.

5. This contest will be judged by library staff. Winners will be contacted on May 14th! The best BAD poem will be posted on WFPL's social media.

Examples of bad poets include William McGonagall, Amanda McKittrick Ros, Philip James Bailey, Mary Elizabeth Coleridge, and Margaret Cavendish. An example of bad poetry is Vogon Poetry from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Inspiration for this program came from the Alfred Joyce Kilmer Memorial Bad Poetry Contest.

April Recipe Board

Take a recipe or a leave a recipe on the Molino Recipe Board. Who knows? You may find your new favorite. This month’s theme: Spring has sprung, bring in a refreshing recipe to share with the community or try one of ours! Not available on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3.

AARP Tax Help at Molino Branch Library

Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Molino Branch Library, Room 124

The AARP Tax Aide program offers free federal income tax filing assistance to low to moderate income taxpayers with a special emphasis on those over 60. All taxpayers are required to have appointments this year. There will be no walk ins and no waiting in line. To make an appointment, please contact the library at (850) 435-1760. The AARP Tax Aide program offers free federal income tax filing assistance to low to moderate income taxpayers with a special emphasis on those over 60. Tax Aides will be present on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10-3 until April 14, and taxpayers may pick up pick up the necessary AARP forms either directly from the Tax Aides when they are present or at the library service desk as supplies last. If you have questions about the AARP Tax Aide program at the Southwest Library and/or to make an appointment to return completed forms, call 850-266-5088. Appointments will be scheduled to start between 10 and 2, Mondays and Wednesdays, ending on Wednesday, April 14. Taxpayers are required to mask up (mouth and nose).

Friends of Southwest Branch Library Book Sale

The book sale is located at the Boutique on your left as you enter the lobby. Cash or check is accepted for payment. Sponsored by the Friends of Southwest Branch Library. GED Instruction at Molino Branch Library

Earn your GED at the Molino Community Center. This is an open enrollment program so that students may enroll anytime during the semester. A current TABE test is required to enroll for the classes. STEAM Take-home Craft: Recycled Newspaper Planter Basket

Recognizing Earth Day and Arbor Day by chipping in with a newspaper planter basket. Newspaper is biodegradable, when folded it can make a basket. Add a little soil and some seeds and you can start new plants.

Do you know the quality of water in your own home or neighborhood? Let’s make our own water filter from household items to find out and test the water.

STEAM Take-home Craft: Rainbow Vision – Spectroscope

How does light reflect in the visible spectrum? In the spectroscope craft, we will take a cd and paper tube to experiment. See how light works indoors and outdoors!

West Florida Public Libraries will be closed Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 in observance of the holiday. Pensacola Library, Molino Branch Library, Southwest Branch Library, Westside Branch Library and Tryon Branch Library will return to regular hours on Monday, April 5. Century Branch Library and Genealogy Branch Library will return to regular hours on Tuesday, April 6.
