Daylight savings time begins this Sunday, March 14 at 2 a.m. Escambia County Fire Rescue reminds the community to check their smoke detectors in time for the "spring forward."

Fire and Life Safety Specialist Ray Melton urges the community to use the semiannual daylight savings occasion as a reminder to check on fire and smoke detectors.

"If your smoke detector is older than 10 years old, it most likely needs to be replaced," said Melton. "Having a working smoke detector and plan of escape from your home are two of the most important steps to being safe when a fire occurs!"

Escambia County residents are encouraged to call (850) 595-HERO for replacement smoke detectors. City residents should call (850) 436-5200.

Escambia County Fire Rescue has a program to provide and install FREE smoke detectors for anyone that needs one. This program was designed to provide our citizens with a smoke detector for their home. Visit this link to learn more.
