March Events at West Florida Public Libraries

Beanstack: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Monday, Feb 1 - Continuous - Virtual, mywfpl.beanstack.org

Enjoy reading 1,000 books with your little ones! Log reading and earn badges all along the way. Bond with your child and inspire literacy along the way. A book a day is 365 books in a year, 730 in two years and 1,095 in three years! There's more time than you think, so get started today! Every 100 books, come into the library to claim a prize. Be rewarded at 1,000 books with a book and a certificate of achievement.

How to participate:

Register for the challenge on the West Florida Public Libraries' Beanstack, either on the mobile app or at mywfpl.beanstack.org

Note: If you registered for our Summer Reading Challenge or another WFPL challenge, you do not need to create a new account! Simply sign in and register for the challenge.

Mystery Book Bundles are available for preschool, middle grade, and young adult readers. Preschool bags contain three new picture books. Middle grade and young adult bags contain two themed chapter books. All books can be checked out for three weeks. Be surprised by a new read today! Available during open hours.

 

Mystery Book Bundles at Southwest Branch Library

Mystery Book Bundles are for children, teens and adults to check out at the Southwest Library. Your mystery bag will have three or four books that have something in common, indicated by the label on the bag. The bag is yours to keep for your next trip to the library (we’ll keep the label to re-use it), but no peeking inside the bag until you’re ready to read!

 

Mindful Journal

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Patrons will incorporate mindfulness practices and daily journal prompts to list, describe and explore all of the many things in life that they are thankful for. Using a gratitude journal, along with mindfulness techniques, has been linked to an overall improvement in the quality of a person’s life.

 

Creative Writing Journal

Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Writing can be an uphill battle, and sometimes getting started is the hardest part. Jumpstart your creative process with monthly themed prompts and writing tips. Use these ideas to start a novel, explore a scene or write a poem.

 

Take-home Craft Kits: Peas Please!

Planting season is right around the corner. Come to Century Branch Library throughout the month of March and pick up your pea seedling kit and biodegradable newspaper pot. Plant the seeds and watch them grow! By spring, you can plant the entire plant, pot and all! This family activity is a great way to learn about beginning gardening for spring. Available during open hours.

 

Take-home Craft Kits: Picasso Me!

Let’s put the “A” in STEAM and make art! Come by Century Branch Library and pick up your ‘Picasso Me’ Kit, which includes a pre-drawn canvas and watercolors. Use your imagination for your Picasso Masterpiece. Try using different tools to paint with like cotton swabs, popsicle sticks or even crumpled foil. You can add other materials to your art piece, too, like magazine pieces or something else you find. Maybe a twig would look nice or piece of playdough! Add to, explore, imagine and create! We would love to see your work! Available during open hours.

Take-away craft kits and other activity bags are available at the circulation desk. Availability is on a first-come-first-serve basis during open hours. Kits rotate regularly.

 

Bookface Photo Contest

You can check out a book from any WFPL location and submit a photo of yourself aligning with one of WFPL’s books, using the cover to create the illusion that they are a part of the cover photo. Please submit your photos to via email using this link during the month of March. Please also submit a photo release form with your photos using this link.
Photos will be posted on our Facebook page linked here on Thursday, April 1. Vote by "liking" your favorites. Photo with the most "likes" by Thursday, April 8 at noon will win a prize!

West Florida Public Libraries presents Family Movie Night. Come in and check out one of our Family Movie Night Bundles. Bundles include a family friendly movie, a bag of microwave popcorn and a family friendly activity. Movies can be checked out for 7 days and the rest is yours to keep!

WFPL Molino Track Challenge

Put on your walking shoes! It’s time to join the walking challenge at the Molino library. Just come over to Molino’s track, turn on your favorite fitness tracker app to log your progress, dial up your tunes or an audiobook and start walking. When you finish come in to the library and log your progress with staff on our track challenge board. The top walker in this program will win The Coldest Water Bottle®.

AARP Tax Help at Molino Branch Library

Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Molino Branch Library, Room 124

The AARP Tax Aide program offers free federal income tax filing assistance to low to moderate income taxpayers with a special emphasis on those over sixty. All taxpayers are required to have appointments this year. There will be no walk ins and no waiting in line. To make an appointment, please contact the library at (850) 435-1760. Appointments will be for Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. For details please contact Molino Branch Library at (850) 435-1760.

The Friends of the Southwest Branch Library Book Sale is always on during open hours! The book sale is located at the Boutique on your left as you enter the lobby. Cash or check is accepted for payment. Sponsored by the Friends of Southwest Branch Library. Not open on Monday, Feb. 15.

 

GED Instruction at Molino Branch Library

Mondays at 6 p.m. - Molino Branch Library

Thursdays at 6 p.m. - Molino Branch Library

Earn your GED at the Molino Community Center. This is an open enrollment program so that students may enroll anytime during the semester. A current TABE test is required to enroll for the classes. Classes will be on Monday and Thursday nights each week from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. No classes on March 15 and March 18.

 

Snap into History- International Women’s Day Photo Booth

Patrons can take their picture in the International Women’s Day photo booth and send it in to be displayed on the WFPL Twitter and Facebook.

 

Cherry Blossom Pom Pom Trees

Friday, March 5 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Let’s welcome the spring season by making cherry blossom pom-poms trees! The National Cherry Blossom Festival will be celebrated in Washington D.C. from March 20 thru April 11 with both virtual and personal experiences this year.

STEAM Take-home Craft: Spring Embossing 

Friday, March 5 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Crafters will learn the craft of embossing. Embossing is creating raised images and designs onto paper, foil, leather, and other materials. Embossing is one of the oldest art forms and also be used to create stamps and seals.  

 

STEAM Take-home Craft: Paper Helicopters  

Friday, March 12 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Build a paper helicopter and watch it fly. Crafters will explore and see how different forces affect their machines. Gravity which, is pulling the helicopter down and air resistance that is pushing up on the helicopter as it falls.

 

STEAM Take-home Craft: STEAM Straw Rocket

Friday, March 19 from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Blast off with your own straw rockets! With this craft, we will explore some simple engineering and aerodynamics of how force makes things move.
