Escambia County Correctional staff gave media members a first look at the new correctional facility's progress, Thursday, Jan. 28.
"We're finishing up construction, and we have anticipated arrival of inmates beginning in late Spring," said Escambia County Director of Facilities Management Cassie Boatwright.
Construction began in November 2018 to replace the Central Booking and Detention Center. The facility is more expansive and equipped with 840 beds. The current County Correctional Facility will remain operational to meet the needs of the incarcerated population.
"This is the future of corrections," said Escambia County Corrections 1st Lt. Jason Walker. "We have 15 housing units and an infirmary. We have a whole wing devoted to juveniles, and they will have everything they need from medical [services], school and recreational needs."
Walker added that the open layout featuring natural lighting, the amenities and programming were all created to encourage inmates' mental health and rehabilitation.
The County Corrections Department is looking for professionals to join their team. Some of the benefits include tuition reimbursement, Florida Retirement System, and medical, dental and vision options.
"We were able to create approximately 100 new jobs with the development of this facility," said County Corrections Cmdr. Scott Nash. "We are in the hiring process now and are looking for medical, dental and corrections professionals."
