New Bus Shelter and Sidewalks Completed in District 3

Published Jun 1, 2020
Escambia County held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of a new bus shelter and 25 sidewalk projects in District 3 today, Monday, June 1. The ceremony took place at 10:30 a.m. outside the Wedgewood Community Center, 6405 Wagner Road.

Guest speakers Rev. Carrie Brown, Wedgewood Neighborhood Association board member Lafanetta Soles-Woods and Pastor and Executive Director of Unity in the Family Ministry, Dr. Calvin Avant commended Commissioner May for his dedication and commitment to the betterment of the Wedgewood and Rolling Hills communities.

"We are very proud of this work, and no man is an island unto himself," District 3 Commissioner May said. "We have dedicated staff—from our traffic staff to our engineers, to our CRA department to the Human Services department, to our administration—that believed in the right things that could help a community that’s been distressed."

While May acknowledged the hardships of the Wedgwood community, he said he preferred to see the glass as half full, instead of half empty.

"As you see today, we’ll be starting a new bus route here, with a shelter for our elderly residents to be out of the weather, and we have sidewalks so our children can continue to come and go to the summer programs and after school programs here at the Wedgewood Community enter" he said. "But it doesn’t stop, as we said earlier, we have over $6 million of sidewalks through every neighborhood in district 3, from Lincoln Park to Englewood, from Montclair to Brownsville to all over District 3, and we’ve been very blessed to give these."

The new sidewalks provide pedestrians and cyclists safer routes to their destinations, while also providing for complete streets, ADA accessibility and walkability connections within the community. Seven additional sidewalk projects are planned for completion in 2020, for a total of $6.8 million in District 3 sidewalk funding.

The new bus shelter was added near the entrance at the Wedgewood Community Center and is the first sheltered bus stop in the neighborhood. The bus stop also features a solar USB charger that allows riders to utilize the Find My Bus app though the ECAT website

The Neighborhood and Human Services Department, CRA, Engineering Department and Mass Transit Department partnered recently to complete the sidewalks and bus shelter, for a cost of $4.4 million, which was funded through LOST, CRA, and CDBG funds.
