Escambia County Fire Rescue has placed two more red bulbs on the “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety wreath, bringing the total to nine structure fires so far during December. Last year's campaign concluded with seven red bulbs.
The eighth fire occurred in the 3800 block of W. Maxwell Street on Friday, Dec. 20. At 12:49 p.m., ECFR was dispatched and upon arrival, units saw smoke showing. It appears the cause of the fire was from a heater. Smoke alarms were present at the time of the incident. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the residents.
The ninth fire occurred in the 6300 block of W. Fairfield Drive at multi-residential housing on Friday, Dec. 20 at 8:18 p.m. Smoke was showing from a rear window when crews arrived. The fire was contained to a kitchen closet. The cause of the fire is being investigating by the State Fire Marshal.
If your home does not have a working smoke detector, please call Escambia County Fire Rescue at 850-595-HERO (4376) or 850-436-5200 for city of Pensacola residents.
The “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety campaign is a collaborative initiative with the city of Pensacola to promote fire safety during the month of December. During the month-long campaign, five-foot wreaths are on display at 18 county fire stations and five city fire stations, with wreaths also placed outside Escambia County's Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building downtown, the Escambia County Public Safety Building, Pensacola City Hall and Cordova Mall near the food court entrance. Each time firefighters respond to a residential fire with damage, a green light bulb will be replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential home.
