Six months of planning and fundraising culminated last week with Escambia County Corrections collecting over 200 toys during their third annual Toys for Tots drive and presenting a check in the amount of $6,344 to the American Cancer Society.
"We have staff members who have fought cancer and most people know someone who's been through it, so I felt it was a worthy cause," Corrections Chief Rich Powell said. "Fundraising and collecting toys is our way of reaching out to the community during this holiday season."
Escambia County Corrections began planning in June for breast cancer awareness month in October. The department sold pink shirts that said "Corrections for a Cure" with an American flag in the center. Fundraising continued through November with "No Shave November," which extended into December. They also sold black shirts that said "Every Beard has a Story," along with the "Fight for a Cure" message.
Corrections staff also decorated Christmas trees at Favor House of Northwest Florida, a domestic violence center serving Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.
