Popular Literary Book Club: “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” by Ottessa Moshfegh

Book events for youth

Read with a Dog!

  • Wednesday, April 10, 4-6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Come to Pensacola Library to practice reading to a dog! Kids can bring their own book or borrow one from us and read to Tanner the dog. There will be 15-minute slots available to read to Tanner from 4-6 p.m. Slots are first come, first served. Please call 436-5038 to reserve your slot.

Pet Partners: Read With Me™

  • Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to noon – Southwest Branch Library

School-aged children are invited to register for a 15-minute session to pick a book and practice reading with a furry friend. Dogs and handlers are coordinated through Pet Partners and Cherry Point Dog Training Inc. Registration is requested.

Wimpy Kid Month Celebration

  • April 1 - April 30, all day – Pensacola Library

Celebrate Wimpy Kid month and the release of Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid by taking a photo at the “Cheese Touch” display and entering a raffle to win a copy of “Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid” to be given away at the end of the month!

STEAM

Open STEAM Lab

  • Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., 6-7:30 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Come explore the technology at West Florida Public Libraries. Learn to code or use the Silhouette machines. Have a sewing project you would like to work on? We have the machines you need. Perhaps you would like to make a poster with the wide format printer. Drop into the STEAM Lab during our open hours and staff will assist you in getting started with your newest project.

Sewing and Quilting with STEAM for Grownups

  • Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon – Tryon Branch Library

Would you like to learn to sew? Come learn at the library. We provide all you need to get started. If you are already an experienced seamstress or quilter, come us for the fun and friendship.

Quilt, Stitch and Sew Open Session

Come learn to quilt, stitch or sew. Want to learn to crochet? Want to brush up on your sewing skills? Want to spend time together with like-minded people working on your craft project? The library has sewing machines and other tools you can use to produce your creations.

Harry Potter Wands - STEAM at Tryon Branch Library

Come cast your spells using Kano Harry Potter wands and learn to code. Join us for fun with magic and coding.

Tryon Tuesday – STEAM for Adults: Silhouette Machine Workshop

  • Tuesday, April 2, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Come learn to create iron-on designs for your t-shirts or other fabric materials using heat transfer vinyl. We will use Silhouette machines to make decorative items for your home, school or as gifts. We will help you get started. Beginners are welcome.

ToolsDay! - Family STEAM Night

How well would a laptop work without any screws to hold it together? Could a jet airplane fly if axles didn’t exist? Come practice using the simple tools that we so often rely on. Plastic toy tools will be available for the very young, and non-powered mechanical tools will be available for everyone else to practice with.

Robotics and Coding Club at Tryon Branch Library

Come explore robotics and coding with the variety of robots that West Florida Public Libraries has to offer. You will learn coding principles and how to program robots to help you solve the session’s challenge. The library will provide all equipment, just bring your enthusiasm and curiosity. Robotics and Coding Club will run through May.

BIoxels - STEAM at Southwest Branch Library

LEGO® Mindstorms Robotics and Coding Club at Tryon Branch Library

  • Saturday, April 6, 2 p.m.

Come explore LEGO® Mindstorms and WeDo 2.0 with the West Florida Public Libraries. We will build robots and learn to program their actions. Beginners are welcome. The library will provide all supplies needed. Robotics and Coding Club runs through the end of May.

Whether you are a brand-new beginner or a master chess player, this is a chance to learn new skills, practice your moves and improve your game in a friendly environment. All playing levels are welcome, including beginners. The library will provide all the chess boards and pieces.

Scrap Mechanic

  • Saturday, April 13, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Scrap Mechanic is a creative multiplayer sandbox survival game where you engineer your own adventure. Choose from the in-game parts to build amazing contraptions. In Scrap Mechanic, you’re the master builder. The library will provide all the technology tools needed. You just need to bring your imagination and ingenuity.

Let’s Make Art! – Saturday STEAM

CodeyBot -  STEAM at Molino Branch Library

  • Tuesday, April 16, 6 p.m.

CodeyBot is a robot that dances, makes music and travels far distances – and you control the action! It even has laser turrets to battle against your friend’s CodeyBot. Come explore robotics and coding through the CodeyBot applications. Join us for a fun evening.

West Florida Public Libraries wants to help you get your important documents and photos digitized. Join us as we observe the American Library Association’s Preservation Week by helping you scan and save your items to a flash drive. Teens, join us in the STEAM Lab for access to video games such as Nintendo Switch and Mario Kart, board games, card games and more tech. Bring your friends or come prepared to make new ones. Tuesdays from 4-5:30 p.m.

Research for Teens and Young Adults

  • Monday, April 8, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

This is a class for teens and young adults interested in learning how to do better research. It will cover how to find good sources, how to use our databases, the difference between primary and secondary sources and more. This is a great class to help you write better papers, or participate in science or history fair. Please feel free to bring your laptop with you; they are encouraged but not required.

Teen Volunteer Open House

  • Saturday, April 27, 10:30 a.m. to noon – Pensacola Library

Are you interested in being a teen volunteer this summer? Drop in at our Teen Volunteer Open House! Come learn more about volunteering at the library and even fill out an application on the spot. Teens attending this open house will get first choice for volunteering this summer, as we can’t guarantee everyone a slot. Parents need not attend – we are looking for motivated self-starters! You don’t need to be outgoing, just ready to work! See you there! Refreshments will be served.

YAS: Young Adult Social

We’re showing classic movies for the whole family once a month with popcorn. This month’s film is 101 Dalmatians, release date 1961, rated G, with a running time of 79 minutes.

AARP Tax-Aide

  • Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation help to anyone. Services are aimed at those who are 50 and older and/or can’t afford a tax preparation service. There’s no fee and no sales pitch for other services. AARP membership is not required. Representatives will be at Pensacola Library to provide this service on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 13, and at Southwest Branch Library on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 15. The last person is accepted at 1 p.m. The program is jointly sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Citizens should bring a photo I.D., Social Security cards or other official documentation for everyone on the return, a copy of last year’s tax return, tax forms and information for this tax year and a schedule of deductions if they have numerous receipts.

GED Classes – Molino Branch Library

Earn your GED at the Molino Community Center. This is an open enrollment program so that students may enroll anytime during the semester. A current TABE test is required to enroll for the classes. One-on-One Assistance and Instruction

Come meet the members of the West Florida Genealogical Society. You don’t have to be a member to attend, and they’ll be glad to help you learn more about researching your family history. Chair Yoga

Want to try yoga? Ease into it with gentle chair yoga; ideal for seniors and those who have difficulty rising from the floor as well as office workers who sit for hours in a chair. Local patron Sallie Beckes, a 500-hour professional yoga teacher, will guide you through the basics of chair yoga: gentle stretches seated in a chair and also standing postures. Registration requested. Sponsored by the Friends of Southwest Branch Library.

Come learn how to create and manage a YouTube channel. We will cover everything from building a basic channel to managing a large-scale channel with playlists. Come learn how to create and manage a Twitch Channel. We will cover building a channel, how to stream your video and what options support overlays and extensions. We will cover how to incorporate stream extensions and how to set them up. The class will teach you how incorporate the green screens and Chroma keys to make you look like a professional.
