The
South Old Corry Field Road Improvement Project is scheduled to begin at the end of September. This project not only replaces the bridge which was temporarily repaired after the 2014 floods, but will double the outfall capacity of the basin, reducing the flooding risks for the Warrington and Lake Charlene areas. Construction costs are estimated at $3.4 million, funded by local option sales tax, and the project will take just over a year to complete, weather permitting.
In the
April 2014 historic flooding event, approximately 300 feet of Old Corry Field Road was washed out, both on the driving surface and each side of the existing box culverts over East Jones Creek. Since that time, the bridge was temporarily repaired and the road reopened as the county worked with the Federal Highway Administration, and the current improvement project was designed, funded, permitted and contract awarded.
The South Old Corry Field Road Improvement Project will remove the existing box culverts and temporary bridge. A permanent precast bridge will be constructed along with curbs and gutters, driveways, sidewalks and drainage improvements along the eastern right of way of South Old Corry Field Road, south of Warrington Middle School to the entrance of the park located south of the new bridge. The project doubles the outfall capacity of the 5.6 square mile basin. Work also includes shoulder curb ramps and ADA-accessible warning mats at Warrington Middle School and Chaseville Street. Residents with existing driveways and mailboxes will have new driveways and mailboxes installed as part of the project.
Road closures in the area will start as early as the first week in October. Construction closures will be announced before they happen. Access to property will always be provided, but there may be periods when a driveway or an entrance is momentarily blocked as equipment and materials are moved during construction. Every effort will be made by the contractor to minimize inconveniences to area residents, and construction is expected to take place Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
