Pensacola– Today, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced that as part of the Pensacola Bay Bridge replacement project, additional improvements to the northern landing and 17th Avenue interchange will be started ahead of schedule through a supplemental agreement. FDOT will incorporate the interchange project in the current project work and expects it to be opened simultaneously with the second span of the new Pensacola Bay Bridge in 2020.
Governor Rick Scott said, “We are working hard to serve the people of Pensacola with transportation that they can rely on. This announcement is yet another example of how we are getting projects done faster. Starting ahead of schedule and completing these projects simultaneously improves efficiency, saves money and eliminates unnecessary travel delays for Pensacola’s residents and visitors.”
FDOT Secretary Mike Dew said, “I want to thank Governor Scott for his commitment to strengthening Florida’s transportation system. Our local and state partnerships in transportation projects are critical to address the needs of our communities.”
The 17th Avenue interchange improvements will replace the signalized intersection at U.S. 98 and 17th Avenue and construct a direct connection from U.S. 98 to the Pensacola Bay Front Parkway and Interstate 110. U.S. 98 acts as a primary hurricane evacuation route for the gulf coast and is an important east-west transportation corridor to serve our residents, military service members, visitors, and business owners each day.
While the first span of the bridge is scheduled for completion next year, all construction work for the existing project and the 17th Avenue interchange improvements are scheduled for completion in mid-2020.
