June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month

Kitten season is upon us and it's the purrrfect time of the year to adopt a feline friend from the Escambia County Animal Shelter. To celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, Escambia County is offering a special reduced adoption fee of $20 for all cats and kittens for the month of June. Adoption fees include altering of the animal (spay or neutering services), microchip and the initial vaccinations, including rabies vaccinations. Escambia County residents will be required to purchase a license at the time of adoption. This is an additional $11 over the adoption fees and is paid separately. 
 
While in the south it typically does not get cold enough to curb all breeding habits, each June animal shelters and rescue centers are flooded with homeless kittens because cats in the area have not been spayed or neutered. This is where the term '"kitty season" is derived. In fact, in just seven years, one unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce 370,000 kittens. On a national scale, the ASPCA reports that approximately 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters and rescues each year.
