Escambia County’s Natural Resources Conservation Division is preparing for a prescribed burn and ecosystem management of approximately 70 acres in the Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve. The controlled burn is anticipated to take place between Tuesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 15 in the area north of Jones Creek between Gulf Beach Highway, U.S. Highway 98 and Fairfield Drive.
The burn is weather dependent and will be conducted by a certified prescribed burn contractor. Oversight is provided by staff from the Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division.
Prescribed burns can have many benefits including reducing the risk of fires by reducing fire fuels, removal of unwanted species that threaten an ecosystem, improving habitat for game, recycling nutrients back in the soil and promoting the growth of trees, wildflowers and other plants.
