Southwest Branch Library Book Club

Friendly literary conversation of “Red Sparrow” by Jason Matthews. The book is set in contemporary Russia, where state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova has been drafted to become a "Sparrow"-a spy trained in the art of seduction to siphon out information from a mark. She's been assigned to Nathaniel Nash, a CIA officer who handles the organization's most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence.

Popular Literary Book Club

  • Wednesday, March 21, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

 "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murder and the Birth of the FBI" by David Grann tells the haunting story of one of the most horrific crimes in American history. In the 1920s, the residents of Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma struck it rich when oil was discovered under their land. As members of the Osage nation were killed off one by one, the FBI stepped in on one of their first major homicide cases, bringing together Texas Rangers, undercover teams and one of the first American Indian agents in the FBI to solve the case.

Molino Book Discussion

Join the Molino Book Group in March for “The Unquiet Grave” by Sharyn McCrumb. This finely wrought novel, set in 19th century West Virginia, is based on the true story of one of the strangest murder trials in American history – the case of the Greenbrier Ghost. A local patron will guide you through the fun and creativity of painting rocks for fun between 4:30 and 6 p.m. All supplies provided by Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.

Hand Decorating Sharpie Clothing

  • Saturday, March 24, 1 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Kids, teens and adults can decorate a piece of clothing with sharpies and rubbing alcohol, which creates a beautiful "rain" effect.  Attendees must bring their own piece of clothing. White cotton clothing works best, but other light colors will work. T-shirts, sneakers, aprons, jeans or any other light-colored, cotton garment are best. All other supplies will be provided.

Tryon Tuesdays Flower Craft

STEAM

Quilting Class – Pensacola Library

Come learn to quilt. We will be creating quilt tops using the Crayon Box pattern, which is a scrap quilt pattern similar to Log Cabin. Please bring six coordinating fat quarters if you would like, or you may choose from a supply of scrap fabric the library will have available during the class.

Would you like to explore some of the robots and other technology tools that West Florida Public Libraries owns? Would you like further instruction with the Silhouette machines? Drop into the STEAM Lab on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and staff will assist you in getting started with robotics, virtual reality or the Silhouette machines.

Come learn how to etch glass using the Silhouette machines. The library will provide the supplies needed, just bring your creativity.

STEAM at Pensacola Library - Bristlebots

What’s a bristlebot? Take one battery-powered toothbrush head. Add a generous dose of awesome. Turn your bristlebot loose and see where it goes. We’ll provide the supplies; you provide the brilliance.

Stop Motion with STEAM - Animation Workshop

We've got the tools, you've got the talent, so come learn how to make a stop-action video with us. We'll have recording equipment and toys, but if you want to bring your own poseable action figure, go for it.

Come build crazy contraptions using Lego® bricks and Cubelets®, robot blocks that join magnetically to work as a team. Each block is about an inch-and-a-half across and connects face-to-face with other Cubelets®. Combine them in different ways and with Lego® bricks, they make your creation move. Duplo® bricks will be available for the little ones.

Sparki Robotics Club – Pensacola Library

  • Saturday, March 3, 2 p.m.

Come learn Sparkiduino, a simplified version of C/C++, to program Sparki, an adorable Arduino robot. Sparki can be programmed to follow lines, solve mazes, avoid walls and edges and draw shapes. This ongoing workshop is intended for ages 9 and up.

Family STEAM Night – Glow Party

What’s more fun than science? Science that glows in the dark. This glow party includes plenty of glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark bubbles, slime, volcanos and more.

Big surprises fly in small packages. Join us for an introduction to using Tiny Whoop quadcopters, small first-person-view aircraft that truly allow you to feel the gift of flight and the feeling of being tiny. Lego® at the Library – Pensacola Library

On March 10, special visitors from the Pensacola Police Department will visit us. On March 24, come build crazy contraptions. The library provides the Lego® bricks, you just need to bring your imagination. Duplo® bricks will be available for the little ones.

STEAM at Pensacola Library - Kids

Join us to explore the technology and tools of the STEAM Lab in these monthly sessions. On March 15, we will explore EggBot, a robot that can draw your designs on eggs. These hour-long STEAM sessions are intended to be enrichment workshops.

STEAM at Pensacola Library - Cubelets - Battlebots

  • Thursday, March 15, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

What's a Cubelet? Cubelets are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Each Cubelet is about an inch-and-a-half across, and magnetically connects face-to-face with other Cubelets. Combine them in different ways, and they'll do different things. Combine them with Legos®, and they’ll do lots of different things. For ages 4 and up. Looking for a challenge? Set your Cubelet robot against a competitor in a contest of battlebots, and see which emerges as the evening’s champion.

STEAM at Molino Branch Library – Kids

Join us in watching the Lego® Ninjago® Movie™ (2017). Come munch popcorn and enjoy this animated action adventure movie. In our second meeting room, we will have Lego® Ninjago® sets for you to build as you watch the movie.

STEAM at Pensacola Library - Kids

Come practice your ninja skills:

  • Make a ninja mask.
  • Pick your ninja weapon (your choice of pool noodle).
  • How many latex balloons can you defeat?
  • Use your ninja skills to sneak past the guards.
  • Are balloons no match for you? Try your skills in virtual reality.
  • Still not enough ninja for you? Then stick around for Bricks and Flicks from 2-4 p.m. and watch “The Lego® Ninjago® Movie” with us.

Celebrations

Good Friday and Easter Weekend

All West Florida Public Libraries locations will be closed Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1, for Good Friday and Easter. Regular hours will resume on Monday, April 2.

Kids Spreading Kindness at the Library

  • Sunday, March 11 – Saturday, March 17 – Pensacola Library

Kids and their parents can write messages of kindness and encouragement to hide somewhere in the children's department or in a book at the downtown library. Paper, pencils, and crayons will be provided.

Leaping Leprechauns

  • Thursday, March 15, 6 p.m. – Century Branch Library

Creating Leaping Leprechauns to find that pot of gold is the best way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Come and join us for fun and food.

Pajama Story Time with the Easter Bunny

  • Tuesday, March 27, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Wear your PJs, bring your blankie and enjoy a story. Have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny. Parents, be sure to bring your cameras.

Genealogy

Regular Meeting of the West Florida Genealogical Society

  • Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m. – Genealogy Branch Library

Come meet the members of the West Florida Genealogical Society. You don’t have to be a member to attend, and they’ll be glad to help you learn more about researching your family history. University of West Florida Archivist Dean DeBolt will highlight the newest collections at the University Archives and West Florida History Center and give an update on the progress in digitizing records that may cast light on your family’s past. Each meeting also provides an opportunity to meet experienced and knowledgeable society members who willingly share their ideas and techniques. Free and open to all.

Tryon Tuesdays Movie Night for the Family

Arrive early every month to enjoy a classic movie and popcorn. Beginning at 4 p.m., this month’s film is the 1993 classic “Homeward Bound”, based on the book, “The Incredible Journey”. This movie is rated G, with a running time of 84 minutes.
