Work begins Tuesday, Feb. 13, primarily on Sunset Avenue, to complete the ECUA's Navy Point Sewer Expansion, Phase 3 Project. The current scope of work consists of repairing previous contractor work that has failed, did not meet standards or was unable to be completed due to substandard base work, which was unacceptable to ECUA. The current contract includes the removal and recompaction of 30 sewer laterals, repair of curbing, the milling of the roadway, overlay of the roadway, repair of a driveway and the installation of the speed tables. During this project, there will be intermittent roadway and/or lane closures during the daytime hours. However, all residents will retain access to their properties although brief delays may occur. The estimated time for completion of this project is 60-90 days.
"This is a great example what happens with cooperation between ECUA and the county to make sure that we're serving the citizens," District 2 Commissioner Doug Underhill said. "We will continue to work through the problem until the people of Navy Point have a road they can be proud of."
In 2013, the ECUA Board approved utilizing capital improvement sewer expansion program funding for the ECUA Navy Point Sewer Expansion, Phase 3 Project. Phase 3 provided gravity sewer collection for 194 Navy Point area properties, located south of Gulf Beach Highway and adjacent to Bayou Grande. The Escambia County Commission requested ECUA to include stormwater drainage upgrades as an additive alternate to the project with reimbursement through an Interlocal Agreement. ECUA and the county were able to work together on the project in order to minimize disruption of the neighborhood.
“We take every opportunity presented to collaborate with other agencies,” said Lois Benson, ECUA Board Chairman and Representative for District 2, “If we can reduce costs, project times, and disruptions then it’s a win-win for all involved.”
Panhandle Paving & Grading was selected through the competitive selection process with the scope of work estimated at $163,825.
