Bookish Happenings

Book events for adults

Southwest Branch Library Book Club

  • Thursday, Dec. 7, 10:30 a.m. – Southwest Branch Library
  • Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Friendly literary conversation of “The Mistletoe Murder: And Other Stories” by P.D. James. Four previously uncollected stories from the mystery great, two featuring the young Adam Dalgliesh. Sgt. Dalgliesh becomes involved in a case described as "pure Agatha Christie" and elsewhere reinvestigates an infamous murder to reassure his godfather about an inheritance. In addition, a stuffy clerk has reasons other than his weird taste in pornography to demur when asked to testify as witness to a murder, and a celebrated crime novelist describes her own involvement in a crime 50 years previously.

Graphic Novel Group

  • Monday, Dec. 11, 5:30 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Join Pop Comics owner Harley Orr and Pensacola Library staff in a discussion of a graphic novel they chose at the November meeting. The group will meet monthly to discuss graphic novels.

Molino Book Discussion

  • Monday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Join fellow readers at the Molino Library for the December book discussion of the National Book Award Finalist, “News of the World” by Paulette Jiles. In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of “Enemy Women” that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.

Popular Literary Book Club

  • Wednesday, Dec. 20, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

“The Bear and the Nightingale” by Katherine Arden opens in a village at the edge of the wilderness of northern Russia, where the winds blow cold and the snow falls many months of the year and a stranger with piercing blue eyes presents a new father with a gift – a precious jewel on a delicate chain, intended for his young daughter. Uncertain of its meaning, Pytor hides the gift away and Vasya grows up a wild, willful girl, to the chagrin of her family. But when mysterious forces threaten the happiness of their village, Vasya discovers that, armed only with the necklace, she may be the only one who can keep the darkness at bay.

Join us for a book signing event with local author John Waite. His work is titled “The Splinter Island Mystery”.

Teen Christmas Party

Come experience your own winter wonderland – a place where you can build an igloo, see the northern lights and enjoy some frosty and not-so-frosty treats.

Crafts

Westside Loopy Loomers

  • Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch Library

Learn to loom knit hats, scarves, lap blankets and other items as we give back to the community. Yarn and looms are provided. All ages are welcome.

Homemade Bath and Body for Adults and Teens

Adults and teens learn how to make wonderful bath products to keep or give as gifts.

Rock Painting

STEAM

STEAM at Southwest Branch Library - Kids

  • Saturday, Dec. 2, 10 a.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Come build “Star Wars”-themed challenge builds. We provide the LEGO® bricks you need to build, just bring your imagination. We will also bring our Cubelet® robots. Cubelets® are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Each block is about an inch-and-a-half across, and magnetically connects face-to-face with other blocks. Combine them in different ways, and they'll do different things. Duplo® sets will be available for the little ones.

Coding Club - Scratch – Pensacola Library

Come learn Scratch, a kid-friendly programming language and create animations, music, games and art projects. This Coding Club runs through the end of December.

Come explore the world of virtual reality with the Oculus Rift. You can choose from a number of experiences, from travel and exploration to games and fun, using this immersive audio-visual headset.

Lego night – Pensacola Library

Visit the craft room to create with Lego®. There will be building challenges and open play. Best enjoyed by ages 2 and up; parent or caregiver must be present.

Cork Ornaments and Trees

  • Thursday, Dec. 7, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Tweens, teens and adults are invited to make a wine cork, table top, Christmas tree and/or ornaments to hang on a regular-size Christmas tree. These corks are dyed a rich, beautiful color and bead decorations will adorn our table-top Christmas trees. We will use glue guns, so this project will not be appropriate for small children. All materials will be provided.

Lego® at the Library

On Dec. 9, come build “Star Wars”-themed challenge builds. On Dec. 23, come celebrate the holidays by building Lego® creations. The library supplies the Lego® bricks; just bring your imagination.

Sparki Robotics Club

  • Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library
  • Saturday, Dec. 23, 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Come learn Sparkiduino, a simplified version of C/C++, to program Sparki, an adorable Arduino robot. Sparki can be programmed to follow lines, solve mazes, avoid walls and edges and draw shapes. This ongoing workshop is intended for ages 9 and up.

Snow Shaker Scenes

  • Thursday, Dec. 14, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Children, tweens and teens are invited to make a winter scene snow globe, using miniature figurines, decorations, and bright glittery snow. The jars used for this craft can also be decorated. This craft is easy and all ages are welcome, though small children may need some assistance from a parent. All materials will be provided.

Stop Motion with STEAM - Animation Workshop

  • Saturday, Dec. 16, 10 a.m. – Pensacola Library
  • Saturday, Dec. 30, 10 a.m. – Pensacola Library

We've got the tools, you've got the talent, so come learn how to make a stop-action video with us. We'll have recording equipment and toys, but if you want to bring your own poseable action figure, go for it.

STEAM Racers - Tiny Whoops

  • Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1 p.m. – Century Branch Library
  • Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch Library
  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 1 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Come learn how to pilot a Tiny Whoop quadcopter, a remotely piloted flyer that fits in the palm of your hand. This activity is intended for ages 6 and up.

STEAM at Molino Branch Library – Kids

  • Tuesday, Dec. 19, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Come celebrate the holidays by building something supercool with LEGO® bricks. The library provides the bricks; you just need to bring your imagination. We will also bring our Cubelet® robots. Cardboard Robotic Arm – Pensacola Library

  • Wednesday, Dec. 27, 10 a.m.
  • Thursday, Dec. 28, 10 a.m. – Pensacola Library
  • Friday, Dec. 29, 10 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Come learn to build a hydraulic cardboard robotic arm in this three-day workshop. The library will provide all the materials and tools needed to build the robot, which uses hydraulic power to move and grip. This workshop is intended for youth ages 9 years and older. Younger children will be allowed to participate if parent or guardian accompanies them and helps them to build.

Bricks and Flicks: Lego® and “Beauty and the Beast” (2017)

  • Thursday, Dec. 28, 2 p.m. - Pensacola Library

Join us in watching the 2017 release of “Beauty and the Beast”. Come munch on popcorn and enjoy this stunningly magical musical. In our second meeting room, we will have Lego® Disney® Princess Belle's Enchanted Castle sets for you to build as you watch the movie.

Hampstead Stage Company presents “A Christmas Carol”

Plan to spend some time with your family at the library for a heartwarming rendition of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” performed by Hampstead Stage Company.

Santa Claus is coming to Town

Santa is dropping by to see who was naughty and who was nice. Listen to a story, eat goodies and talk to Santa.

Pajama Story Time with Santa

  • Tuesday, Dec. 12, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Wear your comfy cozy pajamas, bring your blankie and join us for stories, lemonade and cookies and a visit from Santa himself. Parents, be sure to bring your cameras.

Movies and Music

Movie Night for the Family – “Polar Express”

A book-based classic that reminds us to believe. This 2016 movie is rated PG and has a run time of 104 minutes.

School’s Out, Nothin’ To Do for Kids

  • Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library
  • Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Watch a movie and eat some popcorn. On Dec. 20, join us for Christmas classic, “A Christmas Story”, leg lamp and all. This 1983 movie is rated PG and runs for 98 minutes. On Dec. 27, tag along with Smurfette and her friends in “Smurfs: The Lost Village”. The 2017 movie is rated PG and has a run time of 89 minutes.

School’s Out, Nothin’ To Do for Teens

  • Thursday, Dec. 21, 2 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library
  • Thursday, Dec. 28, 2 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Watch a movie and eat some popcorn. On Dec. 21, plan on magical beasts flying out of suitcases in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. This 2016 PG-13 movie is a little longer, with a run time of 133 minutes. On Dec. 28, get ready for some action. “Kong: Skull Island” is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 118 minutes.
