Central Water Works Issues Precautionary Boil Water Notice

Published Nov 3, 2017

This notice applies to residents of McDavid and Century living on Barnes Road, Commalander Road, Cox Road, Crary Road from 4011 to 4811, Holland Road, McClammy Road, North Century Boulevard from 3301 to 4500, West Roach Road, Thompson Road and Whirlpool Road.

A break in the water main was discovered at 3451 N. Century Blvd. at approximately 2 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3. In order to make repairs, the water main was valved off as close to the break as possible; however water customers in the nearby vicinity were without water service during the repairs.

What should I do?

As a precaution, we advise that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient. As an alternative, bottled water may be used. Residents are also advised to take precautions when bathing, especially immunocompromised individuals, infants or the elderly.

What happened? What is being done?

In order to repair our water main, water service was valved off from customers on Barnes Road, Commalander Road, Cox Road, Crary Road from 4011 to 4811, Holland Road, McClammy Road, North Century Boulevard from 3301 to 4500, West Roach Road, Thompson Road and Whirlpool Road, leaving those customers without service. When service is completely stopped, or when a loss of sufficient water pressure occurs, this could cause backsiphonage of contaminants, such as E. coli bacteria, into the water system. Water containing E. coli bacteria can be considered safe for drinking and cooking after vigorously boiling the water. Disease symptoms caused by these bacteria may include diarrhea, cramps, nausea, and possibly jaundice, and any associated headache and fatigue. EPA has set an enforceable drinking water standard for E. coli to reduce the risk of these adverse health effects. Under this standard all drinking water must be free of these bacteria.

The water main has been repaired. The water system is currently collecting samples to determine if the presence of E. coli bacteria exists within the water system. This precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until a bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink. The anticipated date for rescinding this notice is Tuesday, Nov. 7 after 3 p.m. Residents will be notified by phone or if they cannot be reached by phone, in writing at their residence.
