Southwest Branch Library Book Club
“News of the World” by Paulette Jiles enters the world in the aftermath of the Civil War, as an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people. This multilayered novel of historical fiction that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.
Graphic Novel Group
Join Pop Comics owner Harley Orr and Pensacola Library staff in a discussion of a graphic novel that participants will choose during the October meeting. The group meets monthly to discuss graphic novels.

Popular Literary Book Club
“This Is How It Is” by Laurie Frankel explores the story of Rosie, Penn and their four boys as they welcome a fifth baby boy into their family. But Claude is not like his brothers. One day he puts on a dress and refuses to take it off. He wants to bring a purse to kindergarten. He wants hair long enough to sit on. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl. Rosie and Penn aren’t panicked at first. Kids go through phases, after all, and make-believe is fun. But soon the entire family is keeping Claude’s secret. Until one day it explodes.
Molino Book Discussion
This month’s book selection is “This House is Mine” by German writer Dorte Hansen and translated into English by Anne Stokes. The New York Times describes this book as a “quirky family saga and social satire.”

Silhouette Machine Workshop – Pensacola Library
Learn how to use the new Silhouette machines - the Curio™ and the Cameo® 3 during training workshops this month. The electronic cutting machines use digital image files to cut patterns and shapes into a variety of materials, including adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl, paper and fabric. The machines can also make stamps, emboss metal and create stencils for glass etching. The workshops will teach the basics of Silhouette Studio®, the program used to create the designs, and get you ready to use the new machines available in the computer lab.
Family STEAM Night – Cubelets®! – Pensacola Library
Cubelets® are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Each block is about an inch-and-a-half across, and magnetically connects face-to-face with other blocks. Combine them in different ways, and they'll do different things. Combine them with Legos®, and they’ll do lots of different things. Each session will be focused on different things, so come for one or all. The sessions are recommended for ages 4 and up.

Build something super with your favorite superhero. Justice League© mini-figures and Lego® build sets will be available to create a planet-saving team. We provide the Lego® bricks; you just need your imagination. We will also bring Cubelet® robots. Cubelets® are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Come learn Scratch, a kid-friendly programming language and create animations, music, games and art projects. This coding club runs through the fall.

Visit the craft room to create with Lego®. There will be building challenges and open play. Best enjoyed by ages 2 and up; parent or caregiver must be present.
Amigurumi Crochet
Needing a new idea for creating handmade holiday presents? Come learn amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheting stuffed animals, people or inanimate objects, such as fruit. Inspired by the book “Literary Yarns”, you can learn to make beautiful gifts for loved ones. A supply of yarn and stuffing will be available or bring your own favorite worsted-weight yarn. Crochet hooks will not be provided. We will begin with a size “E” hook.
Family STEAM Night – Potions and Lotions
Older children, teens and adults will be able to create spa products from a variety of natural, easily purchased, household items. Attendees will be able to take them home and use them or package them as gifts. All materials will be provided.

Sparki Robotics Club
Come learn Sparkiduino, a simplified version of C/C++, to program Sparki, an adorable Arduino robot. Sparki can be programmed to follow lines, solve mazes, avoid walls and edges and draw shapes. This ongoing workshop is intended for ages 9 and up.
STEAM Special Visitor – Beekeeping with the Escarosa Beekeepers Association
Come learn about the joys of beekeeping with special visitors Shelby Johnson and Alan Woods from the Escarosa Beekeepers Association. They will talk about bees, beehives and how honey is made.

Celebrations
A Salute to Veterans
Join the Molino Historical Society along with the Molino Branch Library as we recognize the service of our veterans. Vietnam War Air Force veteran, Molino resident and author Scott Harrington will talk about his book, “They Called It Naked Fanny.” This book details life-saving exploits of the helicopter crews at Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base.
Thanksgiving Coloring Contest
Children up to age 12 can pick up their coloring sheet and entry form at the Molino Branch Library starting Monday, Nov. 6. Color the lively Thanksgiving turkey and return him to the Molino Branch Library by 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, for a chance to win a prize. Winners will be announced on Monday, Nov. 20.
Veterans Day – Closed
West Florida Public Libraries will close in observance of Veterans Day. All branches will return to regular hours on Sunday, Nov. 12.

International Games Week 2017
We do some of our best learning when we play. International Games Week started as National Games Day, a free event in 2007 with people playing board games at the same time at libraries around the world. It became International Games Day in 2012 and International Games Week in 2017. Join us during International Games Week for a world of fun.

Genealogy
Annual West Florida Genealogical Society Seminar
On Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the West Florida Genealogical Society will host its annual seminar at First Christian Church, 6031 Goodrich Drive, Pensacola. The seminar will replace the general meeting for November. Certified Geneologist Clarise Soper, a Michigan native who has lived in Mississippi for over 25 years, will speak. Soper was certified by the Board for Certification of Genealogists in 2014 and sits on the board for the Association of Professional Genealogists. Continental breakfast and lunch is included in the registration fee through Oct. 31. Registration forms may be obtained at the West Florida Genealogy Library, 5740 N. 9th Ave., Pensacola. Registration is $35 for WFGS members and $40 for non-members through Oct. 31. On-site registration from 8-9 a.m. is $40.
