About 50 Escambia County employees volunteered Friday, Oct. 13 in support of the United Way Day of Caring, an annual community service effort coordinated by United Way of Escambia County. This year's volunteers worked on a variety of projects at several locations throughout the county, including Capstone Academy, Heritage Oaks R.V. & Mobile Home Park, Lutheran Services Florida, Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Coast, West Pensacola Elementary School, O.J. Semmes Elementary School and Sherwood Elementary School.
Each year, the one-day event gives participants an opportunity to learn about the needs of the community while helping a nonprofit agency or school. United Way of Escambia County matches groups and individuals with agencies and local schools to spend the day volunteering on various projects.
The volunteer work this year involved indoor and outdoor projects, from painting and landscaping to reading with children and painting rocks for a rock garden. Staff members from Escambia County's Engineering Department also completed an impromptu drainage project to alleviate a drainage issue in front of Capstone Academy. Participating county departments included Community Corrections, District 2 Commissioner Doug Underhill's Office, Escambia County Area Transit, Facilities Management, Human Resources, Information Technology, Natural Resources Management, Public Safety and West Florida Public Libraries.
