Book events for adults

Southwest Branch Library Book Club

Friendly literary conversation of “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance. Light refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.

Graphic Novel Group

  • Monday, Sept. 11, 5:30 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Join Pop Comics owner Harley Orr and Pensacola Library staff in a discussion of a graphic novel that participants will decide on during the August meeting. The group meets monthly to discuss graphic novels.

Popular Literary Book Club

  • Wednesday, Sept. 20, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

“Everything I never Told You” by Celeste Ng takes us into the world of Lydia, the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother’s bright blue eyes and her father’s jet-black hair. Her parents are determined that Lydia will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together tumbles into chaos, forcing them to confront the long-kept secrets that have been slowly pulling them apart.

Molino Book Discussion

  • Monday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Join us for a rousing book discussion of the true story of “The Lost City of the Monkey God” by Douglas Preston. This is an amazing adventure story of the discovery of a forgotten city abandoned in the Honduran rain forest. Indiana Jones would have been proud to be on this expedition.

Book events for youth

American Girl Book Club: ‘Meet Molly’ meeting 2 of 3

  • Saturday, Sept. 16, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Girls will learn what life was like for an American girl growing up during WWII in America through the book, activities and food of the era. For Molly McIntire, life seems full of change. It's 1944 and the world is at war. Her father is far away caring for wounded soldiers. Her mother is busy working for the Red Cross. And everyone in America is so serious and practical that glamorous Halloween costumes are hard to get. Molly's special hula skirt is a huge success -- until Ricky, her pesky big brother, plays a mean trick. Molly and her friends are determined to get back at him. One mean trick leads to another until the fighting goes too far. Each child in attendance receives a free copy of the book from Friends of the Southwest Branch Library, who also provide all supplies for the meeting activities. Preregistration is requested.

Westside Loopy Loomers

Learn to loom knit hats, scarves, lap blankets and other items as we give back to the community. Yarn and looms are provided. All ages are welcome.

Fairy Houses

Tiny houses have their own appeal, and we want to see yours. Show off your flowery creativity when you make your very own fairy house.

Make it Monday - 3-D Salt Painting

  • Monday, Sept 18, 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

We will draw with glue, sprinkle some salt and add watercolors to make vivid 3-D original works of art. Bring your imagination. All other supplies provided.

Fall Container Gardening

Do you like cabbage, kale or collards? If so, come and listen to Paul Flores answer questions and show you which pots are suitable to grow your favorite vegetables in.

Hide-and-Seek Rock Painting

Join the #PensacolaRocks movement. Spend some time with us painting funny, inspirational and pretty rocks for others to find.

Legos® at the Library – Pensacola Library

Calling all Master Builders: Come get your build on with Legos® at the Library as brought to you by the STEAM Team. Join us every other Saturday for themed builds from 10 a.m. to noon. September builds include “Build that City” on Sept. 2, Batman on Sept. 16 and Fidget Spinners on Sept. 30. The library will provide all the Lego® bricks needed for building.

Sparki Robotics Club – Pensacola Library

Come learn Sparkiduino, a simplified version of C/C++, to program Sparki, an adorable Arduino robot. Sparki can be programmed to line follow, solve mazes, avoid walls and edges and draw shapes. This ongoing workshop is intended for ages 9 and up.

Introduction to Silhouette Machines Workshop – Pensacola Library

Do you love making things? WFPL has new Silhouette machines - the Curio™ and the Cameo® 3. These electronic cutting machines use digital image files to cut a variety of materials, such as adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl, paper and fabric. The machines can make stamps, emboss metal and create stencils for glass etching. These workshops will teach you the basics of Silhouette Studio, the program used to create the designs and give you a glimpse of all the things you can make using the machines. What will you create?

STEAM at Tryon Branch Library - Kids

Do you like building things with Lego® bricks? Would you like to build a robot with battery-powered blocks that move, sense light and make noise? Join us for fun with Legos® and Cubelets. What's a Cubelet? Cubelets are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Each Cubelet is about an inch-and-a-half across and magnetically connects face-to-face with other Cubelets. Combine them in different ways, and they'll do different things. Duplo® sets will be available for the little ones.

STEAM at Tryon Branch Library - Adults

  • Tuesday, Sept. 5, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

This session will be an introduction to the Silhouette machines. Come learn about creating designs with these cutting machines. We will start with creating designs using paper. The Silhouette machines also work with vinyl, metal and fabrics.

Lego® night – Pensacola Library

  • Tuesday, Sept. 5, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 12, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 19, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 26, 6 p.m.

Visit the craft room to create with Lego®. There will be building challenges and open play. Best enjoyed by ages 2 and up; parent or caregiver must be present.

T-shirt Quilting Class – Pensacola Library

  • Wednesday, Sept. 6, 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 13, 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 20, 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m.

Join us to learn how to create a t-shirt quilt. The library will provide the sewing machines, cutting tools and interfacing. Please bring nine of your favorite t-shirts that you don’t wear anymore and want to turn into a comfy quilt.

Family STEAM Night – Cubelets!

  • Thursday, Sept. 7, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

What's a Cubelet? Cubelets are robot blocks that combine to work together in a team. Each Cubelet is about an inch-and-a-half across, and magnetically connects face-to-face with other Cubelets. Combine them in different ways, and they'll do different things. Combine them with Legos®, and they’ll do lots of different things. We’ll be trying different things during each of the two sessions for this program, so come on in and cozy up to some Cubelets. For ages 4 and up.

Come learn Scratch, a kid-friendly programming language and create animations, music, games and art projects. This Coding Club will run through the fall.

"Here There Be Dragons" Family STEAM Night

  • Thursday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

This family STEAM night and craft event is based around the love of dragons, including making "Glass Dragon Eyes", "Bejeweled Dragon Eggs", having your photo taken fighting a dragon with a sword, a short dragon film, treats and more. All materials will be provided and this program is appropriate for children 5 and up.

Family Saturday STEAM: Special Visitor - Service Dogs

  • Saturday, Sept. 23, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Have you ever wondered about the life of service dogs? Would you like to learn more about the work that they do? Are you curious about how they are trained? Join us for special visitor Deb Vivian as she brings her service dog to Pensacola Library and explains how dogs are superheroes every day.

Family STEAM Night - Bubbles, Boats and Things that Float

  • Thursday, Sept. 28, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Come explore what items float. You will build your own soap-powered boat and create life-size bubbles. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to raise a sunken ship from the depths.

Labor Day

Cybersecurity Seminar

  • Tuesday, Sept. 19, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Come listen to Randy Ramos of GBSI Inc. speak about the exciting field of cybersecurity. Learn how he became interested in cybersecurity and how students can to get into the field. Students who are interested in technology are highly encouraged to come, as well as their family. Ages 10 and up are welcome.

Harley Quinn Day

  • Saturday, Sept. 23, 11 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Calling all superheroes and master villains: Harley Quinn has taken over Batman Day. Everyone is invited to dress in their best and join West Florida Public Libraries in celebrating the day. With costume contests, crafts, games and special guests, there will be something for everyone.

Southwest Branch Library’s Annual “Fancy Nancy” Party

  • Saturday, Sept. 23, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Let us bring out the Nancy Girl in you. Dress up in your best “Fancy Nancy” style and enjoy a tea party that includes games, snacks and a lot of fun.

Come meet the members of the West Florida Genealogical Society. You don’t have to be a member to attend, and they’ll be glad to help you learn more about researching your family history.

Movies and Music

Movie Night for the Family – “The Lego® Batman Movie”

  • Tuesday, Sept. 19, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

An irreverent, fun take on how Batman just might need to learn to work with others to save Gotham from the Joker. This 2017 release is rated PG, with a run time of 104 minutes.

Join Escambia County Extension Agent Beth Bolles for some great ideas for edible plants to spruce up your garden and take you into the fall planting season.

Hunter Safety Class

•             Wednesday, Sept. 6, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Get ready for the fall hunting season. Hunters need this class to get their hunting license.  Do not wait until the last minute. This class requires completion of the Florida's free on-line hunter safety course BEFORE attending class. Go to myfwc.com to register and take the online course.
