Rainfall and Weather Advisories Continue

Published Jun 21, 2017

The National Weather Service is forecasting flash and river flooding, isolated tornadoes, high surf, deadly rip currents and minor coastal flooding from the impact of Tropical Storm Cindy. Areas have already seen 4-8 inches of rain and may see additional bands producing up to 4-8 inches more, and some areas up to 10 inches, through Thursday, June 22. Coastal areas can expect 1-3 feet of water through Thursday, with minor flooding impacts in low-lying areas. The high surf will be dangerous to all swimmers, and frequent life-threatening rip currents are expected.

Current warnings include:

  • Flash Flood Warning in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday, June 23.
  • Tornado Watch in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 21.
  • Coastal Flood Advisory that includes coastal Escambia County, remaining in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 21.
  • High Surf Advisory until 6 p.m.
  • High rip current risk remains in effect through late Thursday night.
  • River Flood Warnings
    • Moderate river flooding of Perdido River at Barrineau Park
    • Minor river flooding forecasted for Escambia River at Century

Turn Around, Don't Drown

  • When approaching standing water, always remember: Turn around, don't drown.
  • While it may appear that water is not deep enough to cause problems, there is almost no way of knowing if the roadbed itself has been eroded or undermined.
  • As little as 12 inches of water can carry away a small car, and 18-24 inches can carry away most large SUVs, vans and trucks.
  • As little as 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over and carry away an adult.

Rip Current Safety

  • Regardless of your swimming level, never swim alone, and always swim near a lifeguard.
  • If in doubt, don't go out.
  • Know how to escape from a rip current. Watch our rip current video and learn how to break the grip of the rip, which can pull even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
