Escambia County Extension Presents "The Science Hour"

UF/IFAS Escambia County Extension will host a new educational series, "The Science Hour," beginning Thursday, June 15. Offered once a month for six months, the series will explore local topics such as climate change, stormwater pollution, bats, and more. Each session is free to the public and held at the Escambia County Central Office Complex, 3363 West Park Place, at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Carrie Stevenson at ctsteven@ufl.edu or call (850) 475-5230.

Dates and topics include:

  • June 15, Climate Change - Climate change has been a hot-button political issue, but what does it mean to us here in northwest Florida? Join us for an overview and thoughtful discussion of the basic science of climate change.

  • July 20, Escambia County Green Roof - Escambia County's Central Office Complex houses the largest continuous green roof in Florida at over 33,000 square feet.  Come learn about green infrastructure and hear an update on Escambia County's green roof.

  • August 17, The Great Scallop Search - The results of the 2017 scallop search will be discussed as well as ways to help restore scallops in our bay.

  • September 21, Local Water Quality Issues: What You Can Do To Help -  The water quality issues within the Pensacola Bay system will be discussed and what is currently being done and how citizens can help improve the water quality.

  • October 19, Bats - Bats and vampires get a lot of bad press around Halloween, but these creatures play an extremely important role in the environment year round. Learn more about local species of bats, their many benefits to human health, and how to attract them to your yard.

  • November 16, Stormwater Pollution - Stormwater is a major environmental issue both in terms of flooding and non point source pollution.  We will discuss how low impact design features can be implemented in our community to both prevent stormwater from entering our waterways and treat it as it does.
