Escambia County Fire Rescue will be installing free smoke detectors Saturday, April 29 in conjunction with the Wedgewood Health Fair, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marie K. Young/Wedgewood Community Center, located at 6405 Wagner Road.
ECFR will be going door to door starting at 8 a.m., walking the Wedgewood neighborhood and offering to install smoke detectors. The canvas will cover the general area south of Interstate 10, north of Pinestead Road and Marcus Pointe Golf Course, east of Kemp Road and west of Pensacola Boulevard.
An ECFR truck will also be on display during the Wedgewood Health Fair, along with a table display offering fire safety information for residents. Other participants in the health fair include the Florida Department of Health, Escambia Community Clinics, Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition and the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics. The event will offer body mass index and HIV screenings, a dietary educational demonstration, diabetic retinal screenings, diabetic education and testing, social services outreach and more.
Smoke detectors that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a working smoke detector cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners and Escambia County Fire Rescue are continuing to work toward their goal of having a working smoke detector in every home in the county.
