Firefighters responded to a house fire in the 9000 block of Huckleberry Lane on Sunday, Jan. 29 where they found two adults, a male and a female, who had perished in the fire. Escambia County Emergency Communications received the call at 12:19 p.m. and the first crews arrived on scene at 12:25 p.m. to find light smoke showing from the entry door. The fire was brought under control at 12:49 p.m.
It is believed that the fire began and was unreported sometime during the night, burning out due to lack of oxygen. Both victims were found inside the home. The Florida State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
A smoke detector was installed in the home, but it is unknown if it was in working condition. Smoke detectors that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a working smoke detector cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half.
If you do not have a smoke detector in your home and need assistance, both the county and the city have programs to help.
