Rolling Hills Facility Update

Published Jan 6, 2017

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has had contractors working to finalize the closure of Rolling Hills Construction and Demolition Debris facility located off Rolling Hills Road. The vast majority of the work onsite has been completed. However, recent heavy rains have caused some erosion of the soil cap and stormwater features prior to stabilization being complete.

During the overnight hours of Friday, Jan. 6, Escambia County measured a maximum hydrogen sulfide, or H2S, gas concentration of 140 parts per billion at the monitoring station located at the Wedgewood Community Center. Elevated H2S levels are likely a result of the heavy rains and resulting erosion. Although 140 ppb of H2S may cause nuisance odors, it is below the 200 ppb level that the Florida Department of Health has determined would result in a health advisory.

DEP is working with its contractors to ensure repairs are made as quickly as possible. Once complete, the proper closure of the Rolling Hills facility is expected to mitigate the H2S gas emissions from the facility.
