Bookish Happenings

Book events for adults

WFPL Book Club

  • Wednesday, Sept. 21, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Join others in a discussion about this month’s book, “A Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold.

Genre Chat Book Discussion Group

  • Monday, Sept. 26, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Join us for an in-depth discussion about book structure, plots, themes and characters of popular genres. This month’s discussion will focus on “The Rook” by Daniel O'Malley.

Books to Film Book Club

  • Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Join others in a rousing discussion of a literary work that is a precursor to a movie.  September’s title is “The Longest Ride” by Nicholas Sparks. The book was published in 2013 and the movie was released March 2015.  

Book events for youth

Friends of the Southwest Branch Library present "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children"

  • Saturday, Sept. 10, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Celebrate the release of the new movie based on the book. Teens ages 12-17 will receive a copy of the book, create altered photos like the ones in the book with their own "alter ego" of a "peculiar child" and create a monster mash-up of life-sized paper cutouts.

R.E.A.D. Dogs

  • Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. – Tryon Branch Library
  • Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Build reading confidence while reading to doggy literacy partners. Sessions are free, but registration is requested. Call Southwest Branch Library at (850) 453-7780 and Tryon Branch Library at (850) 471-6980 to reserve a 15-minute time slot.

American Girl Book Club 'Kit Kitteridge'

  • Saturday, Sept. 17, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Participants ages 7-13 will explore the world of Depression era American Girl Kit Kitteridge through crafts, games and activities. Participants will receive a Kit Kitteridge book. Registration is required. Call Southwest Branch Library at (850) 453-7780 to register.

Books & Pizza

  • Tuesday, Sept. 20, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Join other teens ages 13-17 for pizza and conversation about books. This book club focuses on what teens like to read, and members decide what they read. All participants need is their appetites and a list of their favorite books.  

Crafts

Loopy Loomers: Learn to Loom Knit

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch Library
  • Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch Library

Learn to loom knit with the Westside Loopy Loomers and pay it forward with projects to benefit the community. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies, but there is a limited supply to get beginners started.

Twisted Stitchers

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Yarners of all ages and skill levels are invited to sit and stitch with Twisted Stitchers. Participants are asked to bring their current knit, crochet or loom knit project or supplies to start a new one.

Topsy-Turvy THURSDAYS

  • Thursday, Sept. 8, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Children age 6 and up are invited to make a puppet. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required. Visit Tryon Branch Library or call (850) 471-6980 for more information and to register.

Make It Monday: Clothespin Dragonfly

  • Monday, Sept. 12, 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

What has six legs and breathes fire? A dragonfly! Children are invited to come make their own dragonflies, fire-breathing optional.

Fancy Nancy Party

  • Thursday, Sept. 15, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Enjoy all things fancy with a tea party, games, activities, stories and crafts based on "Fancy Nancy" books.

Sensational Saturdays

  • Saturday, Sept. 17, 12:30 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Participants are invited to preserve precious family memories with “Scrapbooking for the Whole Family.”

Teen Time: Perler Beads

  • Saturday, Sept. 24, 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Youth ages 12-17 are invited to delve into their imaginations and create anything they can conceive with fusable beads.

Make It Monday: Alien Spaceship

  • Monday, Sept. 26, 4 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Reach for the stars and join the Children’s Department in making a miniature alien spaceship and green-skinned pilot.

Library Card Sign-up Month

  • September – all West Florida Public Libraries

Join West Florida Public Libraries in celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month. Libraries will have a variety of promotions and displays featured to celebrate.

Constitution Day Display

  • Sept. 14 to 20 – Pensacola Library

The Pensacola Library Reference Department will be commemorating the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, with a book display on the second floor of the building.

Batman Day

  • Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Join us as we celebrate Batman Day with crafts, games, an escape room and other activities. Follow West Florida Public Libraries on Facebook and Twitter for further updates.

Banned Books Week

  • Sept. 26 to Oct. 1 – all West Florida Public Libraries

West Florida Public Libraries will be joining other American Library Association libraries around the U.S.A. in celebrating Banned Books Week. The celebration of the freedom to read has been celebrated yearly since 1982.

Finance

Financial Literacy: Budgeting Basics and Dealing with Financial Institutions

  • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 10 to 11 a.m. – Pensacola Library
  • Thursday, Sept. 8, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Take steps toward financial health. Join Dan Bowen with Consumer Credit as he explains how to understand and create a budget that works for you. Participants will also learn about different types and functions of banks and which type is best for you.

Financial Literacy: Credit Scores and Reporting and Predatory Lending

Become financially healthy.  Join Dan Bowen with Consumer Credit as he shows ways to safeguard your credit and make informed credit choices. Learn how to identify predatory lenders and how to avoid money scams.

Outdoors

REACH for Your Trowel

  • Saturday, Sept. 10, 10:30 a.m. – Molino Branch Library

Learn how to grow plants you can eat. Fall and winter can be the most enjoyable seasons to grow edible plants. Join Escambia Extension to learn about garden preparation, planting techniques and a few very attractive vegetable selections for the cool season.

Fall Container Gardening

  • Thursday, Sept. 22, 11:30 a.m. – Westside Branch Library

Join Paul Flores in learning which plants grow well in the fall and winter. Participants will learn gardening tips in this workshop.

REACH for Safety- Florida Fish and Wildlife: Hunter Safety Course and Skills Day

  • Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Learn to be a safe hunter with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.  Participants must preregister online here; complete online coursework (either the free online Hunter Safety course or one of the fee-based courses); and bring their certificate of completion to this class in order to participate. Friends of the Southwest Branch Library Classic Movie:  "Night of the Hunter"

This terrifying movie has Robert Mitchum as a nefarious preacher hunting for the children of a widow he murdered.

Sensational SATURDAYS: “Pirates of Penzance”

  • Saturday, Sept. 3, 12:30 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

Join us for this comic opera (performed in English) featuring mistaken identity, swashbuckling pirates and a young Kevin Kline.

Music

Appreciating our Marching Bands

  • Thursday, Sept. 15, 5:30 p.m. – Century Branch Library

Listen to the talent of local marching bands. Then, explore instruments and learn what it takes to master the music.

Tunesday Sound Café

Join us around the baby grand piano each Tuesday evening to listen to live music played by local and visiting artists, courtesy of the Jazz Society of Pensacola. Enjoy a cup of Joe or tea on us to chase away those Tuesday blues.

This 90-minute class is for people who are new to Excel. Attendees will learn basic formatting skills and how to navigate around a spreadsheet.

Word 2010 Basics

Today, many businesses accept only online applications for employment. Join this 90-minute class to learn how to successfully complete and submit an online application. Basic computer skills are all that is required.
