Students to Present Natural Resources Projects at Intern Symposium

The Escambia County Department of Natural Resources Management will host the Spring 2016 Internship Project Symposium and Reception Friday, May 6 from 2-4:30 p.m., where students will present projects completed during spring internships with the department. The symposium will take place at the Escambia County Central Office Complex, located at 3363 W. Park Place in Pensacola. Interns’ employers, peers, associates, educators, family and friends are invited to attend.

Interns have worked on a variety of projects in the Escambia County Water Quality and Land Management Division as well as the Marine Resources Division, with the presentation topics and schedule as follows:

  • Low-impact design monitoring: Lexie Woodson and Steven Brighton, 2:25 p.m.
  • Impervious surface mapping of Escambia County: Zach Fenton, 2:35 p.m.
  • Carpenter’s Creek Basin study: Muri Flores, 2:45 p.m.
  • Herpetology study within Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve: Tiffani Vincent, 2:55 p.m.
  • Surface water monitoring process: Jeremy Munn, 3:05 p.m.
  • Geographic Information Systems emergent grasses: Liz Seavoy and Robert Jordan, 3:15 p.m.
  • Geographic Information Systems artificial reefs: Mitchell Sangprawej, 3:25 p.m.
  • Microplastics: Mackenzie Farrell, 3:35 p.m.
  • Fisheries data: Arissa Gratowski, 3:45 p.m.
  • Marine debris: Sabrina Straus, 3:55 p.m.

After the interns complete their presentations, the Community Spotlight: Interns of Tomorrow portion of the symposium will highlight Washington High School Marine Science Academy students, who will present about lionfish prey selection on various reef structures. Natural Resources Management Department Director Chips Kirschenfeld will give a welcome at the event, with closing remarks by Marine Resources Division Manager Robert Turpin.
