The Escambia County is preparing for a one day prescribed burn on approximately 27 acres between Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, May 31. The area for the proposed burn is located south of Saufley Pines Road and west of Spanish Oak Court. The burn will be conducted by staff from the Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division and the Northwest Florida Water Management District.
Although every effort will be made to ensure smoke will not affect homes or highways, drivers should exercise caution in case smoke does lead to reduced visibility on the area's roadways. The final decision to burn is based on the day's predicted fire weather forecast and comes after a burn authorization from the Florida Forest Service.
According the U.S. Forest Service, prescribed burns can have many benefits including the reducing the risk of fires by reducing fire fuels, removal of unwanted species that threaten an ecosystem, improving habitat for game, recycling nutrients back in the soil and promoting the growth of trees, wildflowers and other plants.
