Try Something New at Your Library

Hey Kids, It’s Mystery Book Month

During the month of September stop by any of our Youth Services Departments and hunt for the mystery book. We’ve disguised it so you’ll have to use your super powers of observation. Be the first in a day to find it and win a trip to the prize box.

Job Skills Workshop

  • Thursday, September 10, 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Molino Branch, Auditorium

How are your job-hunting skills? In this workshop for adults and teens Craig Shumaker, of Workforce Escarosa, will share tips to help improve your search, brush up your resume and promote successful interviews.

Meet the Author: S. McEachin “Mac” Otts

Author of “Better than Them, The Unmaking of an Alabama Racist” will discuss this memoir of his journey through a racially divided world.

Bully Proofing Seminar

  • Saturday, September 12, 2 p.m. - Southwest Branch, Meeting Room First in a monthly three part series, this martial arts class teaches kids empowerment and confidence. Recommended for ages 3 and up; youth ages 3 to 5 with a caregiver, please.

Anything Can Happen Thursday: Bad Art Night

  • Thursday, September 17, 5:30 p.m. - Main Library, Craft Room

Do you long to create a memorable masterpiece but don’t know where to start? Let us help you with access to a spread of random art supplies and an atmosphere of pure creativity. With the goal of making it ugly and the freedom to laugh about it, sky’s the limit. All ages are welcome.

Fancy Nancy Dress-up Party

  • Thursday, September 17, 6 p.m. - Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

“The day you were born the world had to make room for a little more fancy.” If this Jane O’Connor quote, author of the Fancy Nancy books, describes a little girl you know, please bring her to this event. Girls ages 4 and up are asked to dress fancy for this hour of stories, games, treats and giveaways.

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

Ahoy Matey, It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day!

Shiver me timbers, here’s your chance to dress like a pirate at the library. Join us for storytelling and a treasure hunt or you’ll walk the plank, ye scallywag. Pirates of all ages- batten down the hatches and come collect your booty. Aarrgh!

Story Time Stay-n-Play

Come to this special Story Time play day where we’ll work in cahoots with 5-2-1-0 to stage activities designed to make your little one hop and giggle until naptime. Snacks and giveaways will be shared with children of all ages.

Daydreamers Book Club

Looking for an escape from the ordinary? Come get lost with us at our new popular fiction book club designed to distract adult readers from the daily chores of life. In September we’ll feature “The Beekeeper’s Ball” by Susan Wiggs.

WFPL Book Club

We all love to talk about the books we read, so why not get together? Join us and we’ll explore a new title every month. September’s adult fiction selection is “Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins.

Genre Chat Book Club

Join us as we discuss an adult fiction title of a different genre each month. September’s genre is mystery featuring “The Forgotten” by David Baldacci.

Books to Film Book Club

Join other adults in a rousing discussion of a literary work that is a precursor to a movie. September’s book is “Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins.

American Girl Book Club

Girls ages 7 to 13 will receive the book “Meet Kaya” and explore her world of Native America through crafts, games and activities. Space is limited. To register, please call (850) 453-7780.

Computer Classes

Our free computer classes utilize desktop PCs and run Microsoft Windows 7 Professional.

Main Library

PowerPoint for Beginners

  • Wednesday, September 9, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will receive an introduction to the basics of Microsoft PowerPoint. They will learn to add and change the background, text and objects in a computerized slide show.

iPads and Tablets

  • Saturday, September 12, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This workshop will help participants feel comfortable with the basic functions of a tablet. If you have one, please bring it.

Excel 2010 Basics

  • Wednesday, September 16, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn how to navigate around a spreadsheet and acquire basic formatting skills in Microsoft Excel 2010.

Cloud Computing 101

  • Saturday, September 19, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

You’ve heard of the cloud, but what is it? Participants in this session will look at cloud based applications and learn how easy and convenient cloud computing can be. Applications to be reviewed include Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox.

Word 2010 Basics

  • Tuesday, September 22, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In this class participants will learn to create a document using Microsoft Word 2010. We will explore tools on Microsoft’s Ribbon, like Spell Check and Grammar Check, as well as review how to print and save documents.

Publisher 2010 Basics

  • Wednesday, September 23, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn how to create greeting cards and flyers in Microsoft Publisher 2010.

Social Media 101

  • Saturday, September 26, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn how to use some of the most popular social media networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Word 2010: Resume

  • Tuesday, September 29, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will cover how to use Microsoft Word to easily create a professional looking resume with basic formatting tools. Students must have basic Word skills to attend this workshop.

Windows 8 Basics

  • Wednesday, September 30, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Workshop attendees will become familiar with the new mosaic look of Microsoft Windows 8’s Modern user interface. Bring your Microsoft Windows 8 laptop or Surface tablet if you have one.

Email Basics

  • Thursday, September 10, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn to compose, send and receive email messages. The class will cover different email providers and basic email security.

Patrons will learn how to attach a file to an email using Yahoo, Gmail or Outlook/Hotmail. This session will also cover how to send a resume to potential employers or a picture or song to a friend.

Origami Yoda: May the Paper Be with You

  • Thursday, September 3, 5:30 p.m. - Main Library, Craft Room

Youth ages 8 and up are invited to create an origami Yoda. “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” says master Yoda.

Topsy-Turvy Thursdays

  • Thursday, September 10, 4 p.m. - Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Build a model of the space shuttle with the Pensacola Modeleers. Designed for ages 8 to 17, this program requires registration as space is limited. Sign up at Tryon Branch’s Youth Services Desk or call (850) 471-6980.

Crafty Kids

  • Saturday, September 19, 11 a.m. - Molino Branch, Room 123

Join your friends at the library and personalize your own canvas tote bag. We’ll color on sandpaper and with adult supervision, iron on your original art work. This program requires registration due to limited supplies. To sign up, please stop by Molino Branch’s Youth Services Desk or call (850) 435-1760. All ages welcome.

Crafternoon

Twisted Stitchers Yarn Club

Join the Twisted Stitchers as we knit and crochet at the library. Currently we are paying it forward by making hats to donate to the Ronald McDonald House of Pensacola. All levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcome.

Chess Club for Youth

Gardening

Grow Your Own

  • Saturday, September 12, 11 a.m. - Main Library, Meeting Room B

Learn how to grow a small fall and winter garden to supplement your table. This program for adults and families will be presented by Beth Bolles of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Services.

Planting for Fall Fun

Come plant a pumpkin to take home and learn some tasty ideas of what you can do with your big, orange squash once it grows. This program is ideal for families.

Fall Container Gardening

Do you know which plants grow well in the fall and winter? Come learn gardening tips from Paul Flores and take home a surprise planting of your own. This program is ideal for families.

West Florida Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting and Presentation

  • Saturday, September 5, 10 a.m. - Genealogy Library

Bert Outlaw, President of the WFGS, will present “They Are on the Census but Where Is Your Family?” by using census, tax records, plat maps and deeds to help locate landless ancestors.

Our Escambia County Communities, Past and Present: the Cantonment and Gonzalez Areas

  • Thursday, September 17, 11 a.m. - Genealogy Branch

Mrs. Priscilla Nobles is a past president of the West Florida Genealogical Society, Genealogy Library volunteer and a longtime resident of the Cantonment and Gonzalez area. She will share with us the rich histories of these communities.

Friends of Southwest Branch Library (FSWBL) Classic Movie Series

  • Thursday, September 3, 6 p.m. - Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

The voting results are in and the first film in this series is “Roman Holiday” starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. This 1953 Paramount Pictures film is not rated and has a 119 minute runtime. Popcorn and bottled water will be served courtesy of FSWBL.

Group Hug Movie Night

Join us for a showing of “Jupiter Ascending”. This Warner Bros. film starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 125 minutes.

Teen Movie Matinee

Teens, ages 10 to 18 are invited to a viewing of “Into the Woods”. This Walt Disney Pictures film is rated PG with a runtime of 124 minutes. Pizza and bottled water will be served courtesy of FSWBL.

Drop by after school and giggle along with us as we watch “Despicable Me 2”. This Universal Pictures film is rated PG with a runtime of 98 minutes.
