Escambia County Deploys Air Quality Monitors in the Wedgewood Neighborhood

Published Aug 12, 2015

In an effort to address concerns from residents following the Florida Department of Health’s release of the Rolling Hills Landfill Health Consultation, the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners recently announced that the second of four hydrogen sulfide (H2S) monitors has been successfully deployed to help determine when sulfide gas levels exceed the thresholds of concern.

The County’s Natural Resources Management Department has been working directly with local residents to place these additional monitors at key locations within the Wedgewood neighborhood near the Rolling Hills facility. H2S data collected from the additional monitoring stations will supplement data already being collected at the existing station located at the Marie K. Young Wedgewood Community Center. The monitoring network formed by these four stations will be used to notify health officials and residents when H2S reach levels warranting a health alert per the Escambia County Health Department.

Citizens who wish to sign up to receive health alerts via mobile text and email may do so by contacting Brent Wipf, Environmental Programs Manager, Water Quality & Land Management Division, at [email protected] or at (850) 595-3445. For more information, contact the Office of Community and Media Relations at (850) 595-3476 and follow @MyEscambia on Twitter.
