Anything Can Happen Thursday

It’s jellyfish time. Come out and make your own, non-stinging jellyfish out of recycled Mardi Gras beads. All ages welcome.

Group Hug

  • Monday, August 17, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A Come watch members of the Metal Works Guild of Pensacola demonstrate jewelry making techniques and get a look at their beautiful finished pieces too.

Author Visit: Victoria Wilcox

  • Wednesday, August 19, 5:30 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Atlanta author Victoria Wilcox returns to the Southwest Branch for a discussion about “The Last Decision”. This is the third book in her Southern Son: The Saga of Doc Holliday trilogy. Copies will be available for purchase at the event.

Edible Herbs

Join Beth Bolles of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Services as she shares how to propagate, harvest and preserve herbs. All ages are welcome.

New Programs

West Florida Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting

  • Saturday, August 1, 10 a.m. – Genealogy Library

This meeting will feature a Legacy Family Tree webinar by Mary Kircher Roddy, Bagging a Live One: Connecting with Cousins You Never Knew You Had.

Movie Night for Grown-ups

  • Tuesday, August 11, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A Join us for a viewing of “50 to 1”. This Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. film is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 110 minutes.

American Girl Book Club

  • Saturday, August 15, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room Girls ages seven to 13 will receive the book “Meet Kaya” and explore the world of the Native American girl through crafts, games and activities. WFPL Book Club

A Family Divided: Genealogy during the Civil War

Make-N-Take

  • Thursday, August 20, 4:30 p.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room C

Rev up your engines with the Pensacola Modeleers and build your own model of a Ford Mustang GT. Designed for ages 8 to 17, this program requires registration as space is limited. Sign up in the Youth Services Department or call (850) 436-5038.

Operation Duct Tape

  • Saturday, August 22, 1 p.m. – Main Library, Craft Room

Since we’ve all tried making duct tape wallets it’s time to experiment with new duct tape crafts. If you are between the ages of 11 and 17, join us for this sticky adventure. Can you duct it?

Teen Movie Matinee

  • Saturday, August 22, 1 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Teens ages 12 to 17 are invited to join us for pizza and a movie featuring “Captain America, First Avenger”. This Walt Disney Pictures film is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 124 minutes.

Books to Film Book Club

  • Tuesday, August 25, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room B Join other adults in a rousing discussion of a literary work that is a precursor to a movie. August’s book selection is “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs.

Crafternoon

  • Saturday, August 29, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch

Come craft the afternoon away with us. Our menu of crafts is overflowing with great activities for all ages. Pick one and give it a try.

Genre Chat Book Discussion

  • Monday, August 31, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Join in this rousing discussion of a literary work. July’s genre is fiction and the title is “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett.

Twisted Stitchers Yarn Club

  • Tuesday, August 4, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Join the Twisted Stitchers as we knit and crochet at the library. Currently we are paying it forward by making hats to donate to the Ronald McDonald House of Pensacola. All levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcome.

Tabletop Game Night

More than Monopoly, these exciting tabletop games are for everyone. Check out fun games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride and more. It’s fun for the whole family.

Come knit and crochet with the Westside Loopy Loomers. All skill levels are welcome to join in the creation of hats and scarves for the residents at Southern Oaks Nursing Home.

Really Knit Stuff

  • Thursday, August 13, 4 p.m. – Main Library, Craft Room

Knit and crochet at the library. All levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcome. Bring an ongoing project or drop in and use our basic supplies to learn.

R.E.A.D. to Dogs

  • Saturday, August 15, 10 a.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room B
  • Saturday, August 22, 10 a.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Build confidence in literacy skills while reading to our canine partners who are certified therapy dogs. Sessions are free but registration is required. Call Tryon Branch at (850) 471-6980 and Southwest Branch at (850) 453-7780.

Saturday Chess Club for Youth

Computer Classes

Main Library

Our free computer classes utilize desktop PCs and run Microsoft Windows 7 Professional.

  • Windows 8 Basics – Tuesday, August 4 - 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Workshop attendees will become familiar with the new, mosaic look of Microsoft Windows 8’s Modern user interface. Bring your Microsoft Windows 8 laptop or Surface tablet if you have one.

  • Word 2010 Basics – Wednesday, August 5 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In this class participants will learn to create a document using Microsoft Word 2010. We will explore tools on Microsoft’s Ribbon like Spell Check and Grammar Check as well as review how to print and save documents.

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Saturday, August 8– 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This class will introduce participants to the components of a computer along with basic keyboard and mouse skills.

  • Cloud Computing 101 – Tuesday, August 11 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

You’ve heard of the cloud, but what is it? Participants in this session will look at several cloud based applications and learn how easy and convenient cloud computing can be.

  • Word 2010: Resumes – Wednesday, August 12 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This workshop will cover how to use Microsoft Word to easily create a professional looking resume with basic formatting tools. Students must have basic Word skills to attend this workshop.

  • Basic Computer Skills II – Saturday, August 15 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This workshop will introduce participants to the Microsoft Windows and navigating between different programs.

  • Social Media 101 – Tuesday, August 18 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to use some of the most popular social media networks such as Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Facebook.

  • File Management – Wednesday, August 19 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In this workshop participants will learn to find, save, copy, move and delete files and folders using the Microsoft Windows application, File Explorer.

  • Email Basics – Saturday, August 22 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn to compose, send and receive email messages. The class will cover different email providers and basic email security.

  • iPads and Tablets – Tuesday, August 25 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will help participants feel comfortable with the basic functions of a tablet.

  • Email Attachments – Saturday, August 29 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Patrons will learn how to attach a file to an email using Yahoo, Gmail or Outlook/Hotmail. This session will also cover how to send a resume to potential employers or a picture or song to a friend.

Century Branch

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Thursday, August 13– 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
