Escambia County Code Enforcement and Solid Waste Divisions are currently monitoring a situation at the Rolling Hills Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill, located at 6990 Rolling Hills Road.
The County was made aware of a smoldering fire early this morning. Crews employed by Rolling Hills have been working to extinguish the fire. As of 8:45 a.m. Escambia County staff report that there is only a small amount of smoke emanating from the landfill.
Residents of the Wedgewood community, located next to the Rolling Hills Landfill, may experience some smoke and odor from today’s situation. Until the smoldering fire has been extinguished, Wedgewood residents should avoid prolonged exposure to the outside air, remaining indoors with their windows closed and air conditioners on if possible.
County staff will continue to monitor the Rolling Hills staff's effort to eliminate the threat of the fire restarting. Attached are photos taken this morning of the smoke coming from this fire.
