Handmade and Green Living

Handmade Haiku

  • Thursday, April 9, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Hey kids, do you haiku? Come to Tryon Branch, write your own haiku and then frame it in a seashell.

Really Knit Stuff

  • Thursday, April 16, 4 p.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room C

Knit and crochet at the Library. All levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcome. Registration is required.

Love My Library Quilting Bee

  • Thursday, April 16, 4:30 p.m. – Main Library, Children’s Department

It’s National Library Week, so show us you love your library by helping make a paper quilt to display. Fill your square with a picture, story or mosaic out of recycled book pages that illustrates your appreciation for libraries. All ages welcome.

EARTH DAY: Footprints On Our Town

  • Thursday, April 16, 5 p.m. – Century Branch

Children will discover how Earth Day is celebrated around the world while making our community clean and green. Enjoy a story, create a craft and receive an Earth Day treat.

Make n’ Take

  • Thursday, April 16, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

In honor of Earth Day, families will make their own miniature greenhouse and plant tomato or flower seeds.

Learn to French Knit

  • Monday, April 20, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch
  • Tuesday, April 21, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch

Explore the basics of French knitting and loom knitting. Learn to make your own loom from recycled items. Space is limited. Registration is required.

New Programs

Pajama Story Time With the Easter Bunny

  • Thursday, April 2, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Wear your comfy cozy pajamas, bring your blankets and enjoy stories with the Easter Bunny.  This will be a great photo opportunity. Parents, be sure to bring your cameras.

Friends of the SWBL Teen Movie Series

  • Thursday, April 2, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Join your friends at a showing of Guardians of the Galaxy staring Chris Pratt and Vin Diesel. Popcorn and bottled water provided by FSWBL. Rated PG-13, 121 minutes. ©Walt Disney Studios.

West Florida Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting

  • Saturday, April 4, 10 a.m. – Genealogy Library, Meeting Room

Attend the Genealogical Society business meeting and enjoy a program too. April’s topic, An Exhaustive Search? will be presented by Mr. Michael Hiatt.

Twisted Stitchers Yarn Club

  • Tuesday, April 7, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Whether you love to knit, crochet or loom knit, join yarners of all ages and skill levels
as we sit and stitch. Be sure to bring your current yarn project or supplies needed to practice your skills.

Teen Poetry Writing Workshop

  • Wednesday, April 8, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Come let your creative juices flow in an unfiltered environment and experiment with writing poetry. Then use your mad skills on our bulletin board in the Teen Paradox Room and create some push pin poetry.

Canning & Food Preservation

  • Saturday, April 11, 10 a.m. – Molino Branch

Do you want to learn to preserve and can jellies and jams? Join us as we pass down this tradition that is just one step beyond cooking.

Passport Pals

  • Saturday, April 11, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Children’s Department

Join the Passport Pals as we travel back in time to ancient Egypt. Find out what was fashionable for kings and queens, what they ate and did for fun, learn to write your name in hieroglyphics and get your passport stamped. This engaging program is designed for elementary age youth.

Miss Martha’s Topsy-Turvy Tuesday

  • Tuesday, April 14, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Everybody needs a potholder, right?  Join Miss Martha and learn how to weave your very own. This hands-on program is recommended for children.

Movie Night For Grown-ups

  • Tuesday, April 14, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A 

Attend a viewing of If I Stay staring Chloe Grace Moretz and directed by R.J. Cutler.  Rated PG-13, 106 minutes. ©Warner Bros.

WFPL Book Club

  • Wednesday, April 15, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Conference Room

Do you love to discuss your favorite books with others? Join us this month as we explore Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Murakami Haruki.

Preserving Old Photographs

  • Thursday, April 16, 11 a.m. – Genealogy Library

Join Priscilla Nobles as she shows us how to preserve and restore old photographs through demonstrations including samples of old cameras and print materials.

American Girl Book Club

  • Saturday, April 18, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Participants will receive the book Meet Kaya and explore the world of the Native American girl through crafts, games, and activities. Registration required. For girls ages 7-13.

In the Kitchen with Jamie & Wendy

  • Monday, April 20, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Learn healthy eating and lifestyle habits as a family. For adults and children together. This program is in partnership with the Escambia County Extension Service.

Group Hug

  • Monday, April 20, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Celebrate the moves and grooves of the local group Dance Konnection. Get your jazz on at Tryon.

Passport Pals

  • Saturday, April 25, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Children’s Department

Hop aboard the train with the Passport Pals as we ride through South America to Peru. Take your picture in a traditional Peruvian poncho, learn a Spanish phrase, make a Peruvian style craft and get your passport stamped. This hands-on program is designed for elementary age youth.

Crafternoon

  • Saturday, April 25, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch

Come craft your afternoon away with friends at the Westside Branch Library. Create your own personalized candle. Space is limited and registration is required.

Adult Book Discussion

  • Monday, April 27, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Do you like talking about books? If so, join us in Molino as we discuss Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry. Genre: Favorite Author 

Books to Film Bookclub 

  • Tuesday, April 28, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch

Join others in a rousing discussion of a literary work that is the precursor to a movie. April’s book is Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

Tim Hollis, Author Visit

  • Thursday, April 30, 6 p.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room B

Tim Hollis, author of The Minibook of Minigolf will take us on a wacky and wonderful tour of miniature golf in the Southeast all from your seat at the library. Minigolf all began in 1925 at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee. Enjoy this trip through southern states and classic American memories.

Hanging exhibit: Featuring works by Evan Taylor

Display case: Showcasing an array of yarn projects such as knitting, crocheting, and loom knitting.

Red and White, Then and Now: A quilt exhibit created by the Perdido Sew Gals, a local chapter of the Pensacola Quilters Guild

GED Classes

  • Weekly on Monday and Thursday, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Students need to take the TABE and fill out the online application to enroll: http://bit.ly/1q5WAK9. Cost for GED class is $30 per semester. Semesters run the same as Escambia County Schools.

Saturday Chess Club

  • Weekly on Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon – Tryon Branch

Learn to play chess for ages 8-14.

Table Top Game Night

  • Thursday, April 9, 6 p.m. – Main Library, Lobby
  • Thursday, April 23, 6 p.m. – Main Library, Craft Room

More than Monopoly. New and exciting tabletop games for everyone. Check out fun games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, miniatures and more. Fun for the whole family.

Computer Classes for Adults

Main Library

  • Word 2010 Basics – Tuesday, April 7 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn to create a document using Microsoft Word 2010. The session explores ribbons, grammar and spell check, printing and saving documents.

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Saturday, April 11 – 10:30 a.m. to noon

This class will introduce participants to the components of a computer along with basic keyboard and mouse skills.

  • Word 2010: Beyond Basics – Tuesday, April 14 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will cover creating tables and newsletters along with inserting WordArt, pictures, and clip art.

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Wednesday, April 15 – 10:30 a.m. to noon

This class will introduce participants to the components of a computer along with basic keyboard and mouse skills.

  • Basic Computer Skills II – Saturday, April 18 – 10:30 a.m. to noon

This workshop will introduce participants to the Microsoft Windows environment including navigating between different programs.

  • Excel 2010 Basics – Tuesday, April 21 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Using Microsoft Excel, participants will learn how to navigate a spreadsheet and learn basic formatting skills.

  • Basic Computer Skills II – Wednesday, April 22 – 10:30 a.m. to noon

This workshop will introduce participants to the Microsoft Windows environment including navigating between different programs.

  • Introduction to the Internet – Saturday, April 25 – 10:30 a.m. to noon

Participants will learn the basics of exploring the internet, navigation, browsers and internet safety.

Century Branch

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Thursday, April 9 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This class will introduce participants to the components of a computer along with basic keyboard and mouse skills.

  • Basic Computer Skills II – Thursday, April 23 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will introduce participants to the Microsoft Windows environment including navigating between different programs.

Southwest Branch

  • Introduction to the Internet – Thursday, April 9 – 10 a.m. to noon

Participants will learn the basics of exploring the internet, navigation, browsers and internet safety.

  • Email Basics – Thursday, April 23 – 10 a.m. to noon

Participants will learn to compose, send and receive email messages and attachments. The class will also cover basic email security.
