Highlighted Programs

Do It Yourself and Green Living

Plant a Seed and Watch It Grow

  • Wednesday, March 11, 10:30 a.m. – Molino Branch

Learn to make your own newspaper seedling pots, plant your seed and watch it grow. This program is recommended for children.

 

Teen Paradox

  • Wednesday, March 11, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Release your inner child and build forts that are bigger and better than ever!  Bring old pillows and blankets for building materials. Recommended for teens ages 12 -17.

 

Egg Painting Craft

  • Thursday, March 12, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Local artist Edith Davis will teach children the art of wooden egg painting. Recommended for children ages 6 – 12.

 

DIY Tinker Lab

  • Thursday, March 12, 4:30 p.m. – Main Library, Craft Room

Entrance into our DIY Tinker Lab guarantees a mixed bag of fun as we learn to make our own homemade toys from recycled materials.

 

Calligraphy

  • Wednesday, March 18, 11 a.m. – Genealogy Library

Dorothy Wallace, member of the Genealogy Society, will give a basic introduction to calligraphy techniques.

 

Automobile Repair & Maintenance Resources

  • Wednesday, March 18, 6 p.m. – Main Library, Computer Lab
  • Saturday, March 21, 2 p.m. – Main Library, Computer Lab

Love to tinker with cars?  Find out about all the FREE resources the library has to offer to help get that ’67 Camaro in tip top shape, change the timing mechanism on a 2012 Buick Regal and more.

 

Really Knit Stuff

  • Thursday, March 19, 4 p.m. – Main Library, Craft Room

Knit and crochet at the library.  All levels of experience from beginners to advanced are welcome.  Registration is required.

 

Goats Galore

  • Thursday, March 19, 5 p.m. – Century Branch

Goats, goats and more goats.  Learn about different breeds of goats and their care.  See first-hand how sweet and loving a goat can be.

 

Make n’ Take

  • Thursday, March 19, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

March is a windy month so make your own wind sock to hang outside.

 

Container Gardening

  • Tuesday, March 24, 11:30 a.m. – Westside Branch

Learn how to grow tomatoes in containers.  Each participant will have their very own plant to take home.  Space is limited, registration is required. Recommended for adults.

 

New Programs

Book Holding Trials

  • Daily, March 2 through March 31 – Tryon Branch, Paradox Room

Take a picture while holding as many of your favorite books as you can, covers facing out.  The winner is the teen who can hold the most books.

 

Crochet for Beginners

  • Thursday, March 5, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch
  • Thursday, March 12, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch
  • Thursday, March 19, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Learn to crochet at the library. In three one hour sessions you will learn how to accomplish basic crochet techniques.  Space is limited, registration is required.

 

Friends of the SWBL Classic Movie Series

  • Thursday, March 5, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Enjoy a classic movie with popcorn and bottled water provided by the Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.  The March movie is Some Like It Hot with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon; 1959. B/W, 120 minutes, Not Rated.

 

West Florida Genealogical Society Monthly Meeting

  • Saturday, March 7, 10 a.m. – Genealogy Library, Meeting Room

Genealogical Society business meeting and program, Migration Routes to the Old South presented by Mr. Bert Outlaw.

 

Movie Night For Grown-ups

  • Tuesday, March 10, 5 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

The March movie is Captain America The Winter Soldier, 136 minutes, rated PG-13. Popcorn provided.

 

Passport Pals

  • Saturday, March 14, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room C

Join the Passport Pals as we travel to China! What do Chinese children eat, wear, speak and do? Come find out, experience it here and get your passport stamped.

 

Friends of the Southwest Branch Library Cartoon Matinee

Enjoy Scooby Doo episodes with popcorn and bottled water provided by the Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.

 

American Girl Book Club

  • Saturday, March 14, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch, Meeting Room

Participants will receive the book Meet Kaya and explore the world of the Native American girl through crafts, games and activities.  For girls ages 7-13. Registration required.

 

In the Kitchen with Jamie & Wendy

  • Monday, March 16, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Families learn healthy eating and lifestyle habits together.  This program is in partnership with the Escambia County Extension Service. Recommended for families.

 

Group Hug

  • Monday, March 16, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Enjoy some toe-tapping, finger snapping music from the Pensacola Ukulele Society. Recommended for families.

 

Miss Martha’s Topsy-Turvy Tuesday

  • Tuesday, March 17, 4 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room A

Make your own leprechaun trap.  Elementary age children can create their own handmade, decorated trap complete with gold coins to lure a greedy leprechaun.

 

WFPL Book Club

  • Wednesday, March 18, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Conference Room

If you are looking for an opportunity to talk about books, join us at the Main Library every month as we explore a new title. The book for March is The Martian by Andy Weir.

 

Passport Pals

  • Saturday, March 28, 10:30 a.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room C

Ooo-la-la.  Join the Passport Pals as we travel to France. Experience what life in France is like for someone like you. What might they eat? What games do they play? Come get your passport stamped and find out.

 

Crafternoon

  • Saturday, March 28, 1 p.m. – Westside Branch

Come craft the afternoon away with friends at the Main Library.  Create a sandpaper and crayon iron-on transfer. Space is limited, registration is required.

 

Adult Book Discussion

  • Monday, March 30, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Come to the Molino Branch to discuss the March book selection Baby Blue along with the book’s author, Mr. Lloyd Albritton. 

 

Books to Film Book Club 

  • Tuesday, March 31, 6 p.m. – Tryon Branch, Meeting Room B

Join others in a rousing discussion of a literary work that is the precursor to a movie.  March’s book is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion.

Art Exhibits

Hanging exhibit: Featuring works by Brenda Mason.

Display case:  Showcasing an array of yarn projects such as knitting, crocheting and loom knitting.

 

GED Classes

  • Weekly on Monday and Thursday, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch

Students need to take the TABE and fill out the online application to enroll: http://bit.ly/1q5WAK9. Cost for GED class is $30 per semester. Semesters run the same as Escambia County Schools.

 

Saturday Chess Club

  • Weekly on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Tryon Branch

Learn to play chess for ages 8-14.

 

Table Top Game Night

  • Thursday, March 12, 6 p.m. – Main Library, Meeting Room C

More than Monopoly.  New and exciting tabletop games for everyone.  Check out games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, miniatures and more.  Fun for the whole family.

Computer Classes for Adults

 

Main Library

  • Basic Computer Skills I – Tuesday, March 3 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This class will introduce participants to the components of a computer along with basic keyboard and mouse skills.

  • Transferring Photos – Wednesday, March 4 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn to move photos from their phone, camera or tablet to the computer.  Reminder:  bring your device and cords.

  • Basic Computer Skills II – Tuesday, March 10 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will introduce participants to the Windows environment including navigating between different programs.

  • Email Basics – Saturday, March 14 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn to compose, send and receive email messages and attachments.  The class will also cover basic email security.

  • Introduction to the Internet – Tuesday, March 17 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn the basics of exploring the internet, navigation, browsers and internet safety.

  • Publisher 2010 Basics – Wednesday, March 18 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn the basics of creating greeting cards, flyers and more.

  • Facebook Basics – Saturday, March 21 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

This workshop is designed for beginners who would like to learn how to create a Facebook profile, add and remove friends and upload photos.

  • Email Basics – Tuesday, March 24 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn to compose, send and receive email messages and attachments.  The class will also cover basic email security.

  • Cut, Copy & Paste – Wednesday, March 25 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn techniques for moving documents, pictures and graphics from one software application to another.

  • File Management – Saturday, March 28 – 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will learn how to find, save, copy, move and delete files and folders using File Explorer.

 

Century Branch

  • Word 2010 Basics – Thursday, March 12 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This class is designed for participants to create a document by learning the basics of Word 2010.  Instruction will cover ribbons; spelling and grammar check; saving work        and printing a document. 

• Word 2010: Beyond Basics – Thursday, March 26 – 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This workshop will cover creating tables and newsletters along with inserting WordArt, pictures and clip art.

 

Southwest Branch

• Basic Computer Skills I – Thursday, March 12 – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
