Clarification Regarding Commissioner May's Participation at Escambia High School Football Rally

Published Sep 1, 2014

In a flier issued on Twitter and covered in today’s Pensacola News Journal, Escambia County Commission Chairman Lumon May is incorrectly identified as a featured attendee at a rally regarding the eligibility of play for six Escambia County High School’s football players and their coach, Willie Spears. Although Commissioner May plans on attending the rally, his attendance is simply that of a concerned citizen and community leader.

“I have a long history with youth sports in Escambia County. It is an important tool in developing discipline in young men and women in our community,” said Commissioner May. “It is my intent to attend this event to hear the concerns of the community, the players and their families. It is not my intent to involve myself in School Board policy. I defer that responsibility to the elected representatives on Escambia County School Board and Superintendent Malcom Thomas.”
