This week, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) recognized Escambia County’s effort to remediate a variety of serious issues at Saufley Field Road Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill.
Escambia County spent more than $6 million to transform the property from an environmental problem into an aesthetically appealing, clean property. Work on the project was started in early 2012 and completed in the spring of 2013.
SWANA awarded the project its Silver Award for Landfill Remediation. By doing so, SWANA is recognizing the hard work of Escambia County and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to turn around a once troubled property.
The property had been a serious health concern for its neighbors as a result of the privately owned landfill’s production of hydrogen sulfide gas. There were also regular outbreaks of surface and subsurface fires, which sent particulate matter from the landfill into the surrounding area.
SWANA recognized Escambia County’s effort because it utilized a modern closure system that had never been permitted or constructed in the State of Florida. A system called “Closure Turf” was chosen to complete the project for a variety of reasons, including its ability to protect the surrounding environment from materials within the landfill and for its natural appearance to those living in the neighborhood, or those passing by on Saufley Field Road.
