As part of the Explore Pensacola History lecture series, the West Florida Public Library presents “Having Fun, Wish You Were Here: The History of Florida through Postcards.”
Author Liz Coursen will host this special event on Wednesday, January 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Southwest Branch located at 12248 Gulf Beach Highway and Thursday, January 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Main Library at 239 North Spring Street.
Images of Florida have fired the American imagination from its very earliest days and the advent of the picture postcard caused an absolute mania for the Sunshine State. Coursen traces the history of postcards from Florida, starting with Ponce de Léon himself, to show that the images on these mementos helped to make Florida what it is today. In the second part of the presentation, she will focus on early postcard images of Pensacola and surrounding areas and the history we can learn from them.
