Fort Pickens Road Closed due to Weather Event

Published Nov 26, 2013

Gulf Islands National Seashore has closed the Fort Pickens Area to all incoming public use due to the winds and high surf from the Monday night weather event, effective Tuesday, November 26, through Friday, November 29.

The park has begun removing sand from the road to allow existing campers to come and go.  The campground itself is not flooded and campers currently in the campground will be able to stay throughout the closure if they choose.  The road will remain closed to incoming visitors and new campers to enable crews to work and provide time for the standing water to subside.  It is anticipated the road will be reopened to all traffic by Saturday, November 30.

Fort Barrancas will be open Tuesday and Wednesday, November 26 and 27. All park visitor centers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28.

For additional information, contact park headquarters at (850) 934-2600 in Florida or (228) 230-4100 in Mississippi, or visit the National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/guis.
