The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will host an informational open house meeting on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Marie K. Young-Wedgewood Community Center to update community members on the closure of the Rolling Hills Construction and Demolition Debris Facility.

The open house meeting will give community members a chance to stop by and talk one-on-one with FDEP experts and others involved in the closure process. Department staff will share information about the closure process, next steps, anticipated timeline and answer questions regarding closure of the facility.

The FDEP has assumed responsibility for properly closing the C&D disposal area. The department has taken the necessary steps to secure the funds from the facility’s financial assurance surety and obtain control of the performance bond which will be used to properly close the facility.

FDEP engineers worked with state contractors, surveyors and landfill closure experts to develop a comprehensive closure design based on current site conditions. A properly designed and implemented closure plan is crucial to the long-term stability and effectiveness of the site closure. The soil cap must be designed and constructed in a way to abate hydrogen sulfide gases, prevent erosion and convey stormwater runoff to the permitted stormwater system for the facility. The department remains committed to upholding Florida’s stringent environmental standards and protecting the health and safety of Florida residents and the environment.
