Book events for adults

Southwest Branch Library Book Club

Choose a date and join in a friendly literary conversation of Jodi Picoult's “Small Great Things: A Novel”. Light refreshments will be served. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.

Arrowood Book Discussion

  • Wednesday, March 15, 10:30 a.m. – Pensacola Library

Many mysteries await Arden when she returns to her childhood home of Arrowood in southern Iowa. What exactly did happen when her twin sister mysteriously disappeared? What secrets is the small town community holding about Arrowood and Arden’s past by proxy? Join the discussion of this eerie tale of mystery and intrigue on March 15.

Author Visit: Maureen Smith Keillor, “Images of Modern America: the Blue Angels”

Maureen Smith Keillor will give a presentation on her new book about the Blue Angels.

The Whistler Book Discussion

  • Thursday, March 23, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Judges are presumed to be impartial arbiters of the law, but who ensures that these authorities are indeed fair and unbiased? Lacy Stolz investigates complaints of judicial misconduct for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. Often her investigations uncover minor offenses.

Molino Book Club

  • Monday, March 27, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

Readers and book lovers are welcome to share thoughts and opinions at March’s book club discussion. This month’s book, “Captain Blood” by Rafael Sabatini, is the story of physician and country gentleman Peter Blood, who is forced to turn from medicine to piracy in this swashbuckling classic.

Books to Film Book Club

Join in a rousing discussion of “A Walk in the Woods” by Bill Bryson. This funny, nonfiction title will trigger a longing for the great outdoors, the beauty of the Appalachian Trail and the chance to meet the folks who brave this time honored American journey. Everyone is welcome, with or without having read the book.

American Girl Book Club: ‘Meet Molly’ meeting 2 of 3

  • Saturday, March 18, 2 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Girls will learn what life was like for an American girl growing up during WWII in America through the book, activities and food of the era. For Molly McIntire, life seems full of change. It's 1944 and the world is at war. Her father is far away caring for wounded soldiers. Her mother is busy working for the Red Cross. Everyone in America is so serious and practical that glamorous Halloween costumes are hard to get. Molly's special hula skirt is a huge success – until Ricky, her pesky big brother, plays a mean trick. Molly and her friends are determined to get back at him. One mean trick leads to another until the fighting goes too far. Each child receives a free copy of the book from Friends of the Southwest Branch Library, who also provide all supplies for the meeting activities. Preregistration is required.

Pet Partners: Read With Me

School-aged children are invited to register for a 15-minute session to pick a book and read to one of therapy dogs who patiently listen while cuddling up to a good story. Dogs and handlers are coordinated through Pet Partners and Cherry Point Dog Training Inc. Preregistration is required.

Teen Events

Teen Tech Night

Teens 13-17 are welcome to explore robotics at Molino Branch Library. Participants will explore with Sparki, and as always, there will be pizza.

St. Patrick’s Day Teen Event

Are you feeling lucky? Make a good luck charm and gather around the pot of gold for a coin toss. Join in a green Jell-O™ prize dive and more fun activities.

STEAM Family Night

Glow Party

What’s more fun than science? Science that glows in the dark. This glow party includes plenty of glow sticks, glow-in the-dark bubbles, slime balls, volcanoes and so much more.

Google Cardboard

  • Thursday, March 30, 6 p.m. – Pensacola Library

Have you heard of VR and wondered what it is? Now is the chance to explore the world of Virtual Reality at STEAM Family Night. Google Cardboard devices will be available to try using a smartphone. Staff will show everyone how to download apps to help take a journey into the 360° immersive realm of Virtual Reality. Please bring a smartphone to the event.

Join us for Fabulous Friday. On March 3, grown-ups can appreciate an hour of sitting with pens and pencils and adult coloring books. On March 10, plan to make some noise while playing the tricky wooden block game, Jenga®. March 17 will be a little quieter, as participants join the resident writer in exploring a creative writing project. March 24 is back to art, with the dot-to-dot craze. Create the Mona Lisa…one dot at a time. On March 31, join in an hour of ah-has and uh-ohs with Uno®.

The weekend has arrived and it’s time to get creative. Kids are invited to the Children’s Room every Friday for simple activities that require nothing but an imagination. On March 3, enjoy coloring books and colors. On March 10, have fun using blocks of different geometric shapes to design and build architecture. March 17 brings fun in the shape of a fancy paperweight using imagination, ingenuity and a rock. There’s more building on March 24, with Brackitz® blocks that link together to create objects. On March 31, children can use giant crystal connectors made of different geometric-shaped, clear-colored plastic blocks to create a cool design.

Basket Craft

Make a cute basket from a kit provided by Friends of the Southwest Branch Library. Materials include cardboard, ribbons, feathers and more. Longtime Southwest Branch Library patron and supporter Diane Bender will guide participants through this activity.

Crochet for Adult Beginners

Join in a beginner’s class to learn the basics of crochet. There is no need for participants to bring anything other than themselves, as all supplies will be provided.

An “Ouchless” Cactus Garden

  • Thursday, March 16, 5 p.m. – Century Branch Library

How do you create a pretty cactus garden without getting your fingers stuck? A garden that anyone can touch and admire? Join in the fun to find out firsthand and be able to take an ouchless garden home.

Make-n-Take                                  

  • Thursday, March 16, 6 p.m. – Southwest Branch Library

Children will decorate their own flowerpot and use it to plant a live garden plant. Appropriate for ages 6 and up. All materials are provided by Friends of the Southwest Branch Library.

Get creative in the craft room. Celebrate National Storytelling Day by making storytelling stones, flat stones with various symbols painted on to prompt written and verbal storytelling.

Gardening

If You Plant a Seed

Join Lisa and Mo the library lion as they present “If You Plant a Seed” by Kadir Nelson. Plant a seed in origami seedling pots made of recycled newspaper. Learn how to take care of the seed and watch it grow into a beautiful plant.

Sowing Vegetables and Flower Seeds

Join gardening enthusiast Paul Flores as he discusses best practices for starting flowers and vegetables from seeds.

Container Gardening in the Spring

No one is born knowing how to use a library, and it’s never too late to learn. Yes, people can figure it out on their own, but it’s always nice to learn from someone who knows the ropes. Instructions will include basics of WFPL account use, review of the library website and some common tasks made much easier by knowing how libraries work.

Pensacola Performances

Area music organizations are partnering to present Pensacola Performances, a weekly series intended to raise awareness of the possibilities for public participation as performers and audience, to promote upcoming events and to explore a variety of musical topics.

Movie Night “Sully”

  • Tuesday, March 21, 5:30 p.m. – Tryon Branch Library

On Jan. 15, 2009, the Miracle on the Hudson took place when Captain Sully Sullenberger glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving 155 people on board. This movie based on the true story is rated PG-13, with a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. Release date 2016, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks.

Hunter Safety Class

  • Wednesday, March 1, 6 p.m. – Molino Branch Library

All hunters born after 1975 are required to take a hunter safety class to get their hunting license. Do not wait until the last minute. This class requires completion of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s free online hunter safety course before attending class. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation help to anyone. Services are aimed at those who are 50 and older and/or can’t afford a tax preparation service. There’s no fee and no sales pitch for other services. AARP membership is not required. Representatives will be at Pensacola Library to provide this service on Tuesdays and Saturdays and at Southwest Branch Library Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 15. The last person is accepted at 1 p.m. The program is jointly sponsored by the IRS and the AARP Foundation and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Citizens should bring a photo I.D., Social Security cards or other official documentation for everyone on the return, a copy of last year’s tax return, tax forms and information for this tax year and a schedule of deductions if they have numerous receipts.

Get your patio garden started with Beth Bolles, Horticulture Extension Agent with Escambia County Extension Services. She will give advice on the best method for producing tomatoes and other vegetables in pots.

Mythosophy®: “Geoglyphs and Myth”
